Newbie on W2r2, getting back in to physical training...

...after nearly 6 months off sick, and I'm taking it slow - to say the least! This may or may not be a sensible thing to do but I have chosen to add an additional 'run' to each week (rest day inbetween) and have increased the 2 day rest to 3 days.

I'm determined to nail this 5k and have signed up for The Color Run in October. Wish me luck?!

Welcome to the programme! I think you and I have different definitions of slow! Why do you want to add another run? I would be worried that it would be too much for me and I would be unable to determine if it was that or running itself that was too much!

I always take 2 rest days in between but I'm older and more sloth-like than you I imagine. I think that, at this pace, I'll graduate on August 18th BUT I fully anticipate taking slightly longer. I've only signed up for 2 virtual runs at the end of my programme since there are no runs where I live! I'm absolutely determined that I will finish the programme but I don't mind if it takes me more than 9 weeks.

Enjoy getting back to fitness! I'm going to say I think some people will follow me advising you not to add that extra run but I could be wrong!

I guess I genuinely was of the belief (if incredibly wrongly!) that by adding a run in I would in some way be MORE ready for the week that followed? I do totally appreciate where you are coming from, and see your point.

I am doing this by way of trial and error, and am more than happy to post results - preferably positive results.

Hi Jmack, in my view doing an extra run each 'week' PROVIDED you stick to at least one rest day, is a good idea. I would say this though, as I'm doing every week twice. Last run (of 6) in Week 7 for me tonight. I find it helps me progress to the next week as there's no way I could have fluked 6 runs. Good luck! x

Best of luck and listen to your body -it'll know if you're running too much or too little.

welcome back and good luck with your journey :D I would say go with your plan for now but see how you feel and maybe bring it back to just the 3 weekly runs ..

It is as they say your race your pace so what ever works for you :D

The C25k plan works very well as it is and has had many thousands of successful graduates, who stuck to it, but we are all different and your variation may well work for you. I thought about doing some variations in the early weeks, but came to the conclusion that the people who devised C25k knew a lot more about running than I did and so I just ran every other day (except for a week in the middle) and the progression from week to week was manageable and still satisfyingly quick to arrive at graduation, without being tied to actual 7 day weeks. As AHS says, listen to your body and if you are fatigued then take an extra rest day.

Good luck.
