I'm new here and came across this place a bit late as I started an exercise program(devised by an idiot..me) in mid Feb and I started using a treadmill and I built up from 20minute session where I did 1.5ks and then I did 30 minutes and built up to about 5.4 to5.5ks in 40 minutes followed by some pool exercise for half an hour( pool exercises devised by the aforementioned numpty).
Then I decided I might try going outside for my walk/jog and I started doing 10k walk/jogs in 1.5 hours and got that down to about 1.13 and since then I've been doing 14 to 15ks in around 2 hours and this is across very hilly country lanes.
I'm nearing 60 and I'm 186 tall and I was 114kgs(125kgs 2 years ago) in mid Feb and now I'm 98kgs and I'd never exercised since I was playing football in my late teens and both my knees are a bit crook but they are not hurting too much(they get very sore on the inside of my legs but I just get used to it. I can't squat for instance)
I've mentioned all this not to prat on about distance ect but because I didn't realise you needed to have days off as I've just been doing it 5 to 6 days a week since I started and I can't really run much more than 2 to 3 hundred metres at a time then I stop and walk very fast, as fast as I can manage until I feel like another spurt of jogging/running.
Everyone says I shouldn't be doing these distances as it's no good for my knees and that I should be using an exercise bike to take the pressure and pavement shock off my knees.
I like my power walking and jogging though and I was wondering if anyone has any words of advice they might care to share. I'm on no medications or anything and have no history of illness ect and while I'm not super super healthy I am getting there and I don't want to stop as I like the bursts of cardio I get.
I've only just worked out your supposed to do exercises after you finish your walk/run. That's why I refer to myself as the 'idiot' back up the page. I've started using the NHS suggested post walk/run exercises just the other week and that's how I found this site.
Cheers Cul.

I admire your tenacity and your determination. That weight loss is impressive! I'm no expert in the matter (I started running in mid-February too) but here's my penny's worth: Going from zero running to 15 km in the space of three months is extremely brave and shows awesome stores of willpower However, doing so much in such a short time frame could be harmful for your body...
You do need to stretch after each run, and you definitely need days off between runs - why not try walking or swimming on your days off ? Your muscles, joints and ligaments need a break to wise up and repair - fitness apparently develops not only during the run, but during the following rest too. Doing too much may lead to an injury that would set you back for weeks, and from what you say, you enjoy running too much to miss it that long.
Too much, too soon. You need to learn to pace yourself I think
C25k programme would be a good one for you. It's all about pacing yourself and you are best off doing it slowly. Rome wasn't built in a day. There is always another day. I think sometimes men are a bit too gung ho about everything, and it's all about quick results in the least possible time. Think of yourself as a slow roasting joint. Low oven for a long time and well worth the wait! Nowt wrong with being a slow burner
If you go slowly, and only jog every other day or so, then you give your poor body time to repair itself. It's what it does on its days off!
Non-running folk always seem to spout doom and gloom about running and it being bad for knees. Not exercising and being overweight is worse for the knees! So, I think you are quite right to want to be moving and keeping your weight down. As do all of us here, so you're in good company
Take time to read some of the posts as we have some folks here your age, all with knees, that may inspire you to keep up this jogging lark. You don't have to be Mo!
I didn't do a run today but did 36ks on a exercise bike and then half hour of warm down exercises from this site.
One knee hurts more from bike riding than it's done from jogging walking so the jury's still out for me but I'm going to cut back to 3 or 4ks on the treadmill and maybe just one big walk jog a week as I'd really like to try a half marathon one day next year.
I miss the wildlife I see on my jogs and the smells and the solitude as I'm not in a big city so it's very peaceful.
I'll look into the c25k proggy. Thanks again for advice and welcome.
The tready when set on an incline reacts a bit like a shock absorber and I'm a big lad and it just doesn't jar like the road surfaces do or the uneven verges, much as I like the outdoor jogs/walk.
10ks in 80 minutes on the tready and a pool workout afterwards(a bit cool for that now though) for a half hour is a great exercise bout for me :-0
I'm in the sub tropics so I'm in a different clime to you.
I see you were wondering about posting a video without the whole world viewing it.
If you upload your video to a cloud based media share site like Dropbox for instance you can give someone the url via a private message or post the url in a message like this but you would have the pic/video in a folder marked private and only who you wish to see it.
I do this with videos I send to my daughter, it's a painless exercise and very easy once you know how. Photobucket is another site as is MediaShare. I like photobucket myself. Tis easy to find via google and simple to install and use.
