Its because the body is adjusting to the additional drain on oxygen from walking to running. Or at least that's what I keep telling myself.

Yes agree with first post. My partner is a gym type and laughed his head off when I suggested that that maybe it's the "wall" after 5 mins then it gets easier lol!

I think it's because I haven't yet found the rhythm and pace to settle into. Usually nowadays I feel much better after 2-3 minutes, but the first couple of minutes is normally a battle between my legs telling me to stop, this is too hard, and my head telling them to get a grip!

First five minutes?!! You're lucky. I'm usually half way through a run before I think, " oh that feels ok now".
