I've got a few days off work. What's the first thing I want to do? Run. What can't I do? Run! HEEELLLLP!!!
My knees hurt. They've been clicking for a while but yesterday my kneecaps hurt when I walked and they even woke me up at night Rest, I guess? Do these things tend to take long? Should I do anything else?
It's mainly around the top and inside, both knees but one's worse than the other. Changed shoes four weeks ago. Maybe I should try my old ones next time I go out
Oh Gludwig, bad news. However there's a really simple cure: quad strengthening exercises. They really do work, if you do them every day. The link below is to the ones my physio gave me, but there are loads of others online and on the NHS Livewell site. They're not a 'quick fix' but they certainly worked for me. You will need to rest and ice too and take regular ibuprofen to reduce the swelling. Hope you're back out there soon.
Thanks, that's really useful. I'll give it a go. I'm hoping I've just overdone it a bit and it won't last long
I know you've taken everything so carefully so a problem with your knees will have caught you by surprise. I hope it's short-lived and you're back running again soon. I can't swim, but whenever I've been injured (usually bike-related) I've been advised to swim as it's non-weight-bearing. Perhaps the Easter break will be a good time for you to do some swimming, or learn to swim if like me you can't swim? I'm keeping that in the back of my mind as a possible next step after learning to run

Thanks, Ruth. I'm swimming tonight - I've been doing an improver's swimming group once a week for a while. Really recommend doing lessons - great fun, and as you say, a good alternative. Hope week 9's going well for you!

That's so good. I would need to do the absolute beginners. I just remembered I've always had that advice when I need to avoid anything weight bearing. Week 9's going well thanks, hope your knees are back to normal asap

I think that would be a great thing to do. If would be another big achievement to add to this one - just saw your post. Sounds like it's going really well. Good luck for your graduation run!
Just had a thought ........ running, swimming ...... anybody think of anything that goes with those? Forget Run for Life, its a triathlon you should be aiming for! I'll come in my fold up chair to watch you from the sidelines!
Ha ha, very funny, although I do ride my bike most days too.... and two of my swimming group are training for triathlons. I think my sights need to be set MUCH lower however!
I think this is a lesson in not missing rest days! I've run with my daughter in between normal runs, and played tennis with my son - he's really good and I'm not so that's a bit strenuous. I actually ended up going for a really long walk along the seafront with them today - the more I walked the better the knees felt. Sat down afterwards, then they were worse again when I got up. Hopefully won't last long. All well with you?
You need to act your age - you're not a teenager anymore you know!!
Poor you, hope you're a bit better today - looks like you should do a bit more swimming - take the pressure off. If you fancy pushing yourself, jump in the sea next time rather than walking along the front! I reckon flying all over the court dashing after tennis balls probably did for you -screeching to a halt and then dashing back to the other side, knees acting like brakes. I know when I play squash with my son I'm like an exhausted blob at the end whereas he's just been standing on the 'T' all the through the game, cool as a cucumber.
I've always had dodgy knees - last time I had a clicking noise was when a bit of cartilage had broken off - so do be careful.
I should have run today but pulled my back y'day (another weakness) so with that and this flipping cold windy weather, I didn't have the will to push myself. Actually its a glorious, bright sunny day but I don't want to have my back seize up on me. Ibuprofen and a bit of pottering I think for me today.
Bad luck on the back - I hope it's improving quickly. I'm sure there will be plenty more sunny days just around the corner to make the most of. The knees are OK, much better already. I'm planning to go for a run tomorrow. I think you're right, I reckon it was mainly the tennis. How you describe the squash is exactly how it is for me and Joe on the tennis court! I just assumed it was the running and feared the worst. I think my Dad has made me paranoid, because he is convinced running destroys your knees and has been on and on at me!
Do you stretch after every run? Watch out for those IT bands, if they get mega tight, it can cause you knee issues.

Thanks. They're feeling much better today. I've stopped panicking!
Don't worry too much what I did in between time whilst my legs were hurting was rest like you say. But do some stretching exercises. Take a look at nhs choices knee pain. There are some good stretches and strengthening leg excercises. You can't do any harm if these are done gently and you are still strengthening up muscles. The main thing is enjoy the holiday wait until all pain has gone - it should only take about three days.
I was back running again within no time and legs we're stronger.
you poor thing! Rest and ice is my recommendation. As a new graduate too I know how frustrating it can be when you can't run when you want to. It's your body telling you to take it easy. Do some curls, press ups, planks and bridges hope you're back out there soon!! x
