PB is better than a world record

I would like to explain why a Personal Best is better than a world record. I listen to radio 4 podcasts when running things like desert island discs, the music is shortened for copyright reasons so mostly made up of the conversation and Friday night Comedy shows. On a recent run one of the shows I listened to was Tom Wrigglesworth recalling conversations with his grandfather when Tom was a boy. His grandfather told Tom he should always try for a PB in whatever he did just as the grandfather did whether it was walking to the corner shop to get his daily paper or repairing a toaster in the shed, because his grandfather said “A PB is better than a world record”. “How can that be “said Tom. “Well” his grandfather said “Anyone can have a world record but only you own a PB”. Which I think is very true because Kenenisa Bekele may currently hold the men’s world record for 5Km and 10Km but inevitably one day someone will take his world record away by beating his time but no one can take away from me my PB I set this morning of 30m 25s for 5Km only myself so that I think is much better than holding a world record.

So I hope you are all very proud of the PB's that you hold and you can go about with a contented smile on your face knowing your PB’s are better than any world record.

I totally agree, and thank you for sharing. Someone (I forget who, some old roman, I think) once said that the man who wins over himself is greater than the strategist who conquers a city. It sounds like the same sentiment.
