Morning all... Aussie reporting in on my recovery day (and a rainy bank holiday - booo)...
Don't panic - all is good today but I am certainly feeling the 10 miler from yesterday... I thought it might be worthwhile describing a few of the aches and pains so you all don't think I go and do this and then don't feel any ill effects at all... Mind you - I like to think of them as "body adaptions"...
1) The balls of my feet are pretty sore today... lots of ice and stretching of the foot... feels okay now...
2) Knees are a little tender - up and down the stairs is okay though so nothing like my bad day!
3) Calves and shins are on a "light burn" - that good type of muscle burn...
So, today is icing regularly and taking a leaf out of Epic Mum's book, some pre-emptive Tubigrip on both legs... Bit of Ibuprofen and we're all good here... I am also doing squats and quad stretches today (thank you Epic Mum again) and they feel GREAT!
I think it's important to know that some aches and pains are normal folks - we are putting our bodies through a lot... but it's equally important to listen to your OWN body and slow it down or take an extra day's rest if things don't feel right...
I'm absolutely fine of course and I know that this is "to be expected" but I also know (thanks to this forum and by reading a lot on the subject) that if I don't feel right about running tomorrow then I'll just take 2 rest days... no harm done in that at all... I expect more than 2 rest days after that HM...
Great post, Aussie and very important too. It's good to let people know that we really do feel it after these longer distances. Knees here too; not pain exactly, just a sensation. Calves and shins, largely fine, strangely. Knees and ankle KT taped-up as a precaution, and icing is going on. Also, slight ache in left shoulder; I'm guessing this is from all the rucksack/Camelbak carrying on the last three runs.
Rest easy mate; good thinking - if you don't feel up to it tomorrow, take another rest day. I'm on my second day of rest, due to run in the morning. I'll either take an easy run or more rest, depending on how I feel in't morning.
Glad to hear that you're feeling okay, despite gripes. I've noticed right from the start that my body is always making adjustments and I feel it here and there. Sometimes a run fixes it, sometimes a rest is needed - you're right about listening to your body. I used to fret about every little thing, but now I realise it's just ligaments and joints getting stronger/adjusting to what I'm putting them through.
I used to worry so much about my knees but this is very interesting and encouraging;
Thanks for that link - I think it's great that although people might say "well, running will hurt your knees... it's bad for you" etc, etc... that actually the science says the opposite and with good running style there's no reason for most people to not be able to run... I grant you that some people will have problems that limit them but for the vast majority a slow paced 20-30 minutes a few times a week keeps the system moving...
Unfortunately the science also tells me that I need to burn that pizza off - there is no way that magical "fat burning post run" actually happens... there is no free lunch!
yes...you must allow your muscles to rest and do what mum says!!! I think 2 rest days is a great idea, and you will come out and thrash it after that...
I feel so much better this evening (didn't feel "bad" yesterday, but feel more refreshed) and I'm ready to knock out 5-6 (or maybe even 7) K tomorrow morning... Hills on Friday and perhaps another long run on Sunday... I do like them...
Glad to be of help Aussie, although I can't claim credit for the Tubigrip Therapy, that was KittyKat's genius idea. Think I've just spent so long banging on about my ailments that I've become inextricably linked to all things knee related. Lovely to hear you've got through yesterday's mega run unscathed- hope the same can be said for your waistline after the mega pizza. Happy resting
Well - I'm going to have to run that pizza off tomorrow I think!
Knees are all good today - a day of Tubigrip in a pre-emptive strike and an additional day of rest... the muscles and joints are ready to run again tomorrow morning...
Lovely post, and I agree 101% with you - a bit of discomfort is par for the course. The real trick is to get to know the difference between the kinds of pain which call for "suck it and see" and those that call for "be worried". Fortunately there are far, far more of the former.
I actually took an additional day of rest today. I was ready to run this morning but honestly felt a bit "meh" about it... I think I was just "tired" rather than sore and achey so I just decided to take another day off and I'll do 5-6K tomorrow as a recovery run...
In a funny twist though, I got kicked by Mrs Aussie this morning who went out and did W2R1 all on her own - laughing at her hubby and his "rest day" malarky... well, the times they are a changin' in this house alright!
