Map My Run app
Some people find it works well although i think there are a lot of variobles- inlcuding the devisce you are running.
I found it struggled as I'm in a very urban area to start with, so it would bounce all over teh place before finding its place and settling down (on my iphone), and i had quite a lot of issues with it.
I evetually gave up and skipped over to runkeeper - which I've not had any problems with at all - plus I like its Goal features and training plans - mostly for free.
Can you work out why it didnt work? Did it pause or get confused somehow?
I use runkeeper because it tracks my other exercise, too.
I find it really good usually, I'm on an android phone. I've not tried any other app like strava or run keeper.
I use it all the time and it works well for me.
A lot can depend on your phone and even the weather I have found can interfere with a signal. I tried it and didn't find it too accurate. Used RunKeeper and still do for my other exercise. But for running and walking now I swear by iSmoothRun.com which I can download my runs/walks onto RunKeeper so its all stored in the same place. Cost £2.99 and gives loads of stats too.
With all GPS devices, you need to stand still to get a good fix, before you start to run. My phone takes about a minute, while my Aldi watch takes four seconds.
I have used Runkeeper for about a year , without any totally bizarre results, apart from current pace which is laughable. Now I have a Gps watch, I have been running with both to compare output. The watch threw a wobbly on my second run, and gave some silly altitude readings, but today it was Runkeeper that decided I had missed a section of my run and plotted a track through half a dozen hedges, way off route. The apps are all only as good as the hardware they are being used on and dedicated systems are meant to be more accurate than phones. I am getting variable results with my Aldi watch, not significantly better than using my phone. tracks look fine on wide view, but when you zoom in tight, the deviation from actual routes on the ground can sometimes be quite a few metres. How this compares to a Garmin, I do not know.
What I am saying is that the technology is not perfect, in the public sphere, and all apps and devices will do silly things at times. There is a new European satellite navigation system, Galileo, coming on stream next year, which will be accessible to all existing devices, but promises to give greater accuracy, free of charge.
I am going to migrate all my run records to Endomondo, because it does a better job of tracking PBs, but will continue to use Runkeeper for its interval facility.
So, you pays your money ( or grabs a freebie) and takes your choice.
I use it (free version) for my runs. It has only not worked on one occasion and I think that it was because my phone had a wobbly when a couple of emails came it at the same time. I tried a Nike one for a while but it was much less reliable for me.

I use it occasionally as I also found it was not very accurate, it does depend on your GPS Signal strength and the area you are running. I was recommended Strava and I do find this more accurate
I used it for quite a long time but found it became increasingly unreliable in its tracking. After observing it tracking me through places I knew I hadn't run (including the boating lake in my local park!) I switched to Endomondo and find that MUCH better.
I use mmr and i find it works ok, although my route is very much the same every time, and quite clear for signal.
Been using for a few months and it stopped once and, when running among tall buildings it didn't catch the signal properly so cut 400meters out of 10km.
Im about to get a gps watch, so then i can compare both
Cheers guys - will have to try a couple of the other ones I think!
