"Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!

Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!

spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,

a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!

Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!"

Goodness - I should think Mo Farah is quaking in his running shoes

I've got my grip back. (By the way, this is only meant to be inspirational, not abusive towards anyone.)

The Lord of the Rings is one of those things. If you like it you do, if you don't, then you boo. ;-)

"Hold your ground! Hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan. My brothers. I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me! A day may come, when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of Fellowship, but it is not this day! An hour of wolves and shattered shileds when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you, stand, men of the west!"

(Again not to be taken offensively by people in the real world, just getting myself in the mood for battle with Laura having skulked in denial for too long.)

I must admit that the St Crispin's Day speech from Shakespeare's Henry V does occur to me when I am trying to gee myself up to get out there.

And the "Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more..." I'm a Shakespeare nut as well as a runner (at least Laura told me I was a runner on a recent podcast, and I'm still trying to believe it!).

That's the one!

Both speeches are amazing. I have St. Crispin's Day pinned up on my desk at work.

I'll have to give it a try. Maybe tomorrow if nothing else springs to mind. It's good to have one in hand for future use.

(Oh there are more - different genre today.)

"Good morning. Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world, and you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. Mankind, that word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences any more. We will be united in our common interest. Perhaps it's fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom. Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution, but from annihilation. We're fighting for our right to live, to exist and should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice, 'We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on, we're going to survive.' Today we celebrate our independence day!"

Good to hear from you - no Viktor on battlefield
