Inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth.
Try to relax into your run, perhaps slow down its meant to be a light jog.
Your recovery walk doesn't hasn't have to be brisk.
Listen to Laura.
Hope that helps.

Thanks I'll give it a go.
Try a method that suits you.
I struggle to breathe through my nose when I am not running so breathing through the nose when running is a no go for me. I did try to regulate my breathing like Laura suggested but I found I was becoming very breathless that way. I control my breathing with 2 counts in, 2 counts out, it was a tip I was given by my one of my running friends. I stagger my counts, so half breath in, then another half breath in, then half breath out, half breath out. It's sounds weird but I find I for it works well for me.
That's weird Jen. I did that when I started without even knowing it was a technique! It just seemed to fit with the 1234 count of my running. . Huh huh, HUH HUH , Huh huh, HUH HUH! I breathe through my mouth too- I can't seem to get enough air in quickly enough through my nose.
Like Jenner, I don't find in through the nose effective. I think breathing gets worse when I think about it, so I would say trust trust your body to work it out.
Everyone is different but I over inhale - so I do a 3 in and 5 out pattern
Different advice here: slow down. The breathing will click at some point, if you're struggling to get enough air in, either through the nose or the mouth (another mouth breather here), then you're going too fast. Slow down, your breathing will become easier allowing you to build speed and stamina later.
I find it easier to just run along with my mouth slightly open and not think about my breathing. If I think about it I can't get it right at all - and I haven't dropped dead yet so I must be doing okay!
I came on here about an hour ago as I too was struggling with motivating myself to run today - W2R1, I'm full of the cold, it's absolutely chucking it down out there, I should be doing housework - lots of excuses. I read this post and thought, sod it, just get on with it, so I did. I'm now back in the house, beetroot red, completely soaked - my glasses steamed up so I couldn't see where I was going so have run through every puddle in the park. And I feel great! I'm really chuffed with myself for having done it, so Lesley, I hope you managed to go for a run and that all the posts above have motivated you as they did me.
Oh, and I tried Laura's breathing tips and nearly fell over - can't think about breathing and running at the same time!
