Now then......! Obviously number of calories in have to be less than calories out in order to lose weight. Calorie counting can be a drag but there are apps that can work out the calorie content of your meals (and anything in between). I suggest that you do this for a few days just to give you an idea of how many calories are packed into the sort of food that you eat. This might shock you and help you work out where to start cutting down on what you eat. Would also suggest that you try and increase the amount of veg that you eat (no sauces, butter etc on them, just plain) as it helps fill you up and also is good for you.

Look up the Fast Diet or 5:2 diet as recommended by Michael Mosely. I can't tell you about the science behind it but a lot of GPs and other doctors are doing it as they have found that it works and is very easy to fit into their week. The idea is that for 2 non-consecutive days each week you eat only 300 calories for a woman or 400 if you are male. The rest of the week you eat normally. There is a useful website about it. I vaguely did it for a few weeks in the summer whilst also running and found the post menopausal tummy that I seemed to have been developing disappeared very quickly. It was surprisingly easy.

What about the Weight Loss Cub on Heath Unlocked?

Did an assignment last year on weight loss and research showed that those trying to lose weight did better if they joined Slimmers World or Weight Watchers. i.e. you need a support network.

A word of caution, though, a few people on C25K have commented that whilst running (I don't think dieting was mentioned) they didn't lose weight but everything tightened up and trousers etc became looser. So if you are exercising as well don't worry too much about the scales, rather how loose your waistbands are becoming.

Hope this is a starting point. Good luck and you can do it!

Sorry Flossie you got the numbers wrong. It's 500 for a woman and 650 for a man. We've been doing it for over a year and Ive lost 3.5 stones.

There's an excellent online calorie counter called myfitnesspal which allows you to enter your goal for the amount of weight you want to lose and then works out how many calories you need per day to get to that goal.

Agree with flossieflyblow that the 5:2 method is easier that keeping tack of your calories every day. Just have to be careful not to overdo it on your 'nomal' days!

Good luck.

I have started the 5:2 fast plan two weeks before beginning C25K. I have lost 13.5lbs (next week hopefully can gleefully say 1 stone!). Thats in 9 weeks. I am 52 so its even more difficult to shift the weight. I truly believe the joint approach has been the reason for the loss. And i have toned legs, arms (??) and i agreewith floosieflyblow above that it is my tummy and midriff (always the last place i loose weight) that has seen the most difference. My waist has gone from 33 to 30 in the 7 wks i have been taking measurements. However on my normal days i have been sticking more or less rigidly to 1300-1400 calories too. With maybe just a sunday as a treat day. I use MyFitnessPal which is a godsend for me - as long as you are honest and put everything in!

Good luck - and keep running!

I dunno. Most doctors and scientists now say don't diet (you end up putting weight on long term) but establish a happy healthy lifestyle. Doing this program is a good start. If I were you, I'd only make dietary changes you can maintain for life. We gave up salt (for 99% of the time and for medical reasons ) and now, have no taste for it. In the rare times I eat crisps or something salty I get a real tongue burn.

Lycranotlikely and Khanmq, sorry to have got the numbers wrong; it was off the top of my head! In fact, thank goodness as that makes it more 'doable'! But 3.5 stones is quite something and you must be delighted!!

All the best!
