Winter is coming....

Clothing question - What do you all wear when running in the chillier months? I've been in shorts and a long sleeve running top up until now but on my last run I found I was cold during the 5 minute warm up and I can see the weather dropping soon. I'm kind of considering running tights but a) I don't know how effective these are for newbie runners and b) I don't want to look like a fat bloke in lycra.

I'm not sure I could run in tracksuit bottoms - any suggestions? anyone in running tights? I have run in a hoody / hooded jacket before now but prefer the free feeling of my running top - considering getting some base layers instead.

I strongly recommend a compression base layer for cold weather - makes a lot of difference. Aldi have some at the moment, if you have one near.

And I wear running tights/leggings for winter too. You feel a bit self-conscious until you realise that virtually every other runner is wearing them too...

Hi phillyq,

I am a newbie runner too and although I am an overweight woman (size 18) I wear lycra running tights, I find them really comfortable and I currently don't care what other people think when I am out runnning. I just wear my long sleeve wick away running top with a baggy t-shirt over the top ( i get too hot wearing a sweatshirt).

I went out running on Thursday and noticed how cold my hands were I will have to get some running gloves for the chillier months ahead.

I noticed a male runner while I was out running last week and he had running tights on with shorts over the top and another male runner had shorts on with knee high socks.

If you are quick you may be able to pick up some compression legs from Aldi. They had a lot of running kit in at good prices. For ladies there was very little in the large size but men's had plenty large size items. May be worth a look.

Tracky bottoms are ok if they're not too baggy. Even in winter you get warm quickly so you'll find yourself stripping down. Gloves are a good call in the colder months, but I found my hat to be a liability.

When I started c25K it was pretty cold, it was in March this year. I remember I once ran when it was 0C, just to challenge myself, but I was wearing track bottoms and did not run 5K. Now I run 5K and 10k and I think Track kits will be too hot. I am considering buying a thermal base layer and a long running bottoms from sports direct. I did go to Aldo the other day and my size was not available but they had a very good selection of running gear for very reasonable prices. I think it is worth a look at Aldi and failing which Sports Direct. Some times you also can find on-line, but the only problem is , you will not be able to try them on.

Good luck!

What are compression under layers & what is their function? Are they like support stockings & if so why would you them on your upper body? Sorry for thickness - mine not the clothing.
