Slow and steady... this old tortoise still got it!

My niece and two of her friends are visiting from South Africa. This morning, they asked if they could come running with me,. As they're all 21, slim, fit young things, I resigned myself to eating dust and plodding along after them. I couldn't have been more wrong. The last one faded and dropped out around the 3km mark, and I went on to do a few more kilometres alone.

It suddenly occurred to me that I might not just be fit "for my age". I think I am actually quite fit now. When I got back, two of the girls were out in front of the house with skipping ropes, obviously trying to restore their dignity with another form of cardio exercise. I don't think there's a female version of a p1ssing contest, but if there is,. I think I may have won...

  • Lol, this made me smile. well done Mehitabel, wonder if they'll ask to join in again?

  • LOL - I love it! ;) Well done you - and you never know, you might just have inspired (or shamed) them into improving their own fitness...!

  • That is soo funny! Well done you! Made me laugh out loud and scare the cat :D

  • Oh yes!! Love it and I bet they are desperately trying to get fit now!!

  • Funny I was thinking of tortoise and the hare today. I got overtaken by someone today who I didn't think looked any more of a runner than me!. Then a couple mins later I overtook her as she was walking. Slow and steady does it.

  • Loved this story. With regard to your comment about not just being fit 'for your age' you might like to Google 'Ernestine Shepherd' who says age is nothing but a number - and she's decades older than you. She's awesome and my role model. Good luck with your running.
