I have a very large grass area which measures 500 metres diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner, what is the overall distance of the four sides of the square? I think it measures 1.4K but can anyone confirm this is correct please?
Mathematical problem to solve please, it is ru... - Couch to 5K
Mathematical problem to solve please, it is running related (or will be)
Yes, 1.4km as per my calculation as well
Looks OK as a simple Pythagoras example. But if you can measure the diagonal why not measure the sides? Or if it's that big measure it on Google maps?
I have tried google map but wasn't very accurate for some reason, the trees down two side distort the distance I think. I'm putting off running it as its very wet in parts at the moment. It was suggested as part of a new Parkrun route but I think it will be too wet for most of the year. I think they need to look else where as a start or finish place. At least I have a rough distance now after walking diagonally across it the other day.
1414 metres according to my schoolboy maths (one side = 500 / sqrt 2 = 353m).
Pythagours theorem
4(sqrt(500^2/2)) =1414.213562
According to my son who is taking A level Mathematics!!
