W5R2 was on Friday and some serious shin & ankle pain coming on in the last 60 seconds of the first 8 minute run & all through the second 8 min run ... so I have bitten the bullet and this afternoon I went to get professionally fitted for running shoes... that word so makes me laugh I am nothing like a runner yet!!
On the video you can see (well they can but I couldn't at first) that I am pronating very heavily which is what is likely to be causing the pain and I need some serious support footware.
The guys in the store were really good and after trying on 4 pairs and running for 200+ metres in each I finally chose the Brooks Adrenelin GTX plus they gave me 10% off as a new customer.... Oh and they showed me that I was previously tying up my laces wrong too
Apparently these are quite a good first shoe & after wearing them around the house today I can see how they stop my instep rolling over..... so tomorrow is W5R3 - the biggie & my first non-stop run, 20 mins - no backing out now!
Great! I too discovered I was over-pronating (around wk 3 or 4) and was advised about Brooks shoes with customised insoles. I recently completed C25K with no further ankle/leg problems and then last week spent 4 days walking miles and miles over all the touristy routes around Florence on ancient stone pavements - exhausting, yes ... but no leg problems at all!
Enjoy your future runs and if you ever need to think about lacing your shoes differently, there are loads of different techniques illustrated on the runners world.com website. Have fun, Cheers Linda
Funny isn't it? It was at that point I went to my local independent sports store and learned that I've been putting my foot in wrong (kick into heels before lacing) and lacing wrong! It's def better now (a week into new shoes) though not COMPLETLY better as I've had to wear heels three times this week (one for lovely night out twice for work), and that always leaves me with sore legs!
