just had my hiatal hernia op done last week I would advise any one who has this to get it fixed as my breathing is 100 p cent now as when I got diagnosed with copd I had the hiatal hernia couple years b for got diagnosed with copd mine was a rolling one so it was stuck 8 centimeters in my chest cavity obstructing my lungs wonder if I ever had copd at all as never smoked I did have ashma so its great relief no more tite chest so if any one has a hiatal hernia bigger than 4 cms it will take pressure of your lungs as it did with me as soon as I would have something to eat my breathing went worse till it digested would go to the doctors I would get fobbed off like its nothing to do with your hiatus hernia y your breathings bad as you have copd so I went along with it also had anemia for years on irion tablts hernia can cause this to I done my home work and kept on going back saying am sure its my hernia causing obstruction waited nearly 4 years for this op so happy now no more bloated feeling and no food getting stuck also when I did the breathing tests to see how my copd was 10 years ago it was borderline if I had it then as the years went by it got bit worse to the second level now when I breath out quickly their is no restriction air comes out my lungs with no noise since my op last wk

do you have syphtons mine were hard to breath when I bent over ie tie laces when I ate a meal my breathing was harder to breath till it digested but was still bit tite when it did digest also if I ate food quickly and dident chew it it would block and get bad stomach pains and some times vomit food back up you need to get appoint meant at hospitail see your docter first if you have syphtons also you can get gerd which is heart burn etc but I neer got this hope this helps also part of your stomach can be in your chest with hiatal hernia and in bad cases other organs can follow up in your chest it can irritate your heart valv to and you can get pains in chest mimicin heart palpitations also if you have copd you don't want any thing presing on your lungs like part of your stomach they pulled mine back down and titend the muscle wall up keyhole surgery 1 day in hospitail then rest for 2 weeks and then you feel great as I do now

Thank you so much for raising this. I, too, have a sliding hernia and I didn't even think of relating this to my breathlessness when bending and after meals. As for the episodes of palpitations, after the usual investigations - ambulatory ECG etc, my GP had no real explanation other than "it happens sometimes".

I'll speak with the surgery respiratory nurse at my next review.

Hope you continue to improve. Best wishes.

No because always eat sitting upright at a table and have smaller, more frequent meals. If I do overeat, it can become uncomfortable.

Think you mite b able to be put to sleep i had camara few years back for sumit else its not nice experiance so when your food gets stuk do u get pains in your stomac and if you try to eat more pain gets worse and vomit thing is my chest is clear now and if yours is causing your breathing to be tite its worth 5 minets of the camara down your throat

Mrshappyme profile image
Mrshappyme in reply toguytane

i cant tolarate the camra so ill see what they say i can have the a barium swollow test somtime i get food stuck and feels tight in my chest sometimes so im eating lightly smaller meals .
