Hi, I am 51 years old, have ME/CFS, Anxiety/Depression/Agoraphobia with panic attacks and PTSD. I went to the dr's two weeks ago as I always feel ill with aches, pains and fatigue, dr done a load of bloods, she said the blood had low oxygen and could indicate COPD (Mum has COPD also), so a few days later I had a spirometry test with the nurse, 78% on the first blow then took my inhaler (Salamol) came out at 102% Nurse said it is clear the inhaler is helping as it opened my lungs to 102, then Nurse said i am 78% and have mild COPD and the dr would be in touch, I didn't hear from dr, so went yesterday to discuss the results, dr said I didn't have copd, I explained that she was looking at the after inhaler results and explained what the nurse had said to me. dr said she would see if nurse had written it elsewhere and i left that with her. I am so confused and this is stressing me out, i have cut down my smoking considerably and went all day yesterday without smoking until I saw the dr, I was that stressed i had smoked, based on what i have told you, do you think I have copd or not, I need to know so i can calm down and really stop this smoking but this is really stressing me out. greatly appreciated any advice. TIA.

Hi it sounds to me more like asthma than copd. Asthma with the right meds is reversible which would explain why your results went so high after using an inhaler. Copd wouldn't see those results after using an inhaler. Have you had a peak and flow test to check for asthma?
Also if you do end up being diagnosed with copd it sounds very borderline in which case you can slip in and out of it quite easily and the tests will be inconclusive. I had the same thing when I was diagnosed. First I had it then I slipped just back out of it again. The reason for this it is common for your lung function to go up or down a few points at any given time.
I do hope you haven't got copd.
Oh Thank you so much for your reply, I do appreciate it, you have made me feel a little hopeful about this, hubby is angry as he was in the room when nurse told me i had copd, so he is going to get me in to see dr tomorrow and talk to her about it. Will keep you posted. Take care of yourself. x
I am now being sent to the hospital for more tests as i had a second spiro at dr's and failed, mine went down after puffer on the second blow will let you know, x
i feel you might benefit from learning how to meditate, or Tai Chi
sounds like to me you are on the road to copd and i would highly advise throwing away the ciggie butts. I would also suggest exercise like treadmill and eat good clean food w/ lots of water. I am very severe copd and believe me this is a path you should avoid if you have the chance. good luck
They originally done this to me it went from asthma to copd and then they said asthma ,I have severe copd now I think I had this all along .But there again they told my husband he had copd but now they say asthma this is why if they think it is copd they should refer you to a specialist my husband thought he had copd for 2yrs totally not fair .I hope it turns out to be asthma for you x

I am now being sent to the hospital for more tests as i had a second spiro at dr's and failed, mine went down after puffer on the second blow will let you know, x
