I was diagnosed with COPD (Moderate) Nov 2021, I’ve had a recent exacerbation which resulted in hospital treatment. I’m no longer on the steroid tablets or antibiotics but I am on 3 inhalers a day one of which is a steroid. I have been on the sick for 6 weeks and due to return to work 4th January… for all it’s just an office job, I feel really scared about going back. I’m not wheezy but I still get breathless doing the slightest thing. I make myself do a daily walk, not far and it can take me ages as I have to stop a lot. I don’t want work to think I’m a fraud or taking the P by taking an extra few weeks off sick… and I don’t know if I should just go back because aren’t I always going to be breathless? Is this my life now?

How long is too long to be on the sick? I’m scared to go back to work 😞
Sounds as if you need an approved exercise program to build back your core strength. Exacerbations can really take it out of you. Discuss with your physician.
It doesn't have to be like that all of the time, get a regular exercise plan and a good healthy lifestyle and make sure Iyour fluid intake is good. Hope this helps , please let us know how you get on have a good day and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx
I don’t think you will be permanently breathless from now on with moderate COPD. It can however take a long time to recover from a chest infection. It sounds like you are trying hard to rebuild your strength and fitness. There are exercise videos on the BLF website which you can do at home if the weather stops you going out for a walk. If you don’t feel well enough to go back to work then maybe speak to your GP and hopefully get their support with taking off a few more weeks, then work won’t think you are messing around.
Hope you feel better soon.
Hi LouAll you need like everyone is saying is exercise start off slowly and build up. Believe me you do need to go back to work, because you will hardly get anything on benefits. I left my job working in a care home last year, I couldn't cope with the constant threat of covid and I was breathless too especially wearing all that PPE. Anyway went on universal credit, and all they did was hound me constantly about getting a job, just because you have COPD doesn't mean anything to them. So take a long look at your situation, make your employer aware, as changes may need to be made in your workplace for you. Please don't think COPD is the end for you, with good exercise and support from your GP you can live relatively normal. I am now working as a support worker visiting people in their own homes, doing a bit of shopping or light cleaning 20hrs a week. Good Luck to you 🙂
Ask your GP to refer you for Pulmonary Rehab which will give you the information and support you need.
