Frequent viewer, seldom responder and have a question. Does anyone (else) with COPD experience a fuller and more normal expiration and inhalation process following a glass or two of wine in the evenings? Although I don’t drink wine often, when I do, I feel a loosening of my usual chest tightening/limitation and an increase to my lung capacity. Beuler? Beuler? Remember that movie? Thanks for any and all responses. I have been curious about this.

Does Wine increase lung capacity?
RedSox, can you report on your own experience on said subject? Thank you.
I always found that any alchohol made my breathing worse - I do know others that it had no impact on - I do not know anyone that breathing became easier
I suppose it’s unusual then. One glass of wine actually seems to relax my chest muscles (?) and I can breathe and feel so much better. Thank you for responding.
I have to laugh a little at your post. I just watched this movie yesterday, Saturday was 1980's day for me. I watched a few 80s movies and listened to 80s music.
I don't drink alcohol so I don't have anything to add about that.
Could be that it just relaxes you so your muscle relax more
Just an opinion, and certainly not based on any medical knowledge,,,,but I would think that wine (or other alcohol), in moderation, tends to "mellow" or relax one and remove some of the feelings of stress. Myself, if I get "keyed up" or agitated, my airways tend to constrict. Perhaps a glass or two of wine helps calm me down and make my airways more relaxed as well.
I think Dgtheel and R2B_John are probably right. I take xanax for anxiety and my breathing becomes easier when I do because I am more relaxed.

Another point to remember is that Xanax and other drugs in that family can lower the respiratory rate and depresses inhalation. So,,,,,certainly not saying that no one should take benzo's, but to have a discussion with the doctor and simply be aware.
Thanks for the tip! I take a very low dose, 0.05mg daily, which I split into 2 separate doses. It was my pulmonary Dr who suggested it. I've had anxiety issues all my life, but never took any medication for it till 5 1/2 years ago. The anxiety has a worse effect on my breathing than the xanax does. It took a lot of doing from a Physical Therapist to get me to take xanax in the first place, but he said his dad also has copd and takes it. Says it helped him a lot.

Thanks, John. For those it helps, I’m all for anxiety meds. I think for now, I’ll stick to a glass or 2 of wine on occasion. It “works” for me. I don’t always have it available, but I purchase a bottle during the next trip to the grocery. That’s simple enough for me.
Good for you,,,,and Good for Grannyk3!! As long as we are aware of pros and cons!! It seems all choices in life have pros and cons,,,,,and knowledge is power!!
I learn from all of you what works for you,,,,,,and since we are all individual and different, we can take what we learn to help make decisions for ourselves.......hopefully, along with your doctor participating in the conversation.
It only makes me smarter. lol
