Hi, Christina. I'm Diane (Usern) 1949. Your situation sounds similar to mine. I was taking NAC regularly a while back for my lungs and liver then I stopped..then I started having "bad" bloodwork results, and I've gotten back on it. I do believe it's one of the best supplements we can take at our age. As you may know, it helps to replenish our body's glutathione or "youth hormone" which we have so little of at our age. Just tell your doctors you're taking it because your bloodwork will come back looking like everything's fine.
I get a good, reputable brand like Jarrow. That's my view and I tout it to every smoker I meet. It's a little pricey but so were the cigs and booze. Ha!
Have a wonderful day.
I believe the lungs produce about a litre of mucus a day which generally works ir’s way into the throat and is swallowed. Some people are more conscious of the presence of the mucus than others and sometimes it may be thicker than normal again making a person more aware of it.
I have COPD . Mild emphysema and bronchiectasis. I take NAC supplement daily and feel they do help a lot with mucus.
I'm a little late--your post is 2 months old, but here's what I know about NAC: reliable studies have been done that show 1200 mg. a day helps with lung function and inflammation, but you have to take that amount for a year before you may see measurable results. So don't give up! I started about a month ago. Right now, I'm suffering from bronchitis and my breathing is terrible! Still taking it though (along with prednisone).
