Polyps and Abdominal Pain

Background

Dec 2023, I started to experience pain when poo’ing, and some significant constipation, that was only relieved with laxatives , once every five days; January 2024 I saw blood on the toilet tissue and started to suffer from abdominal pains. I contacted my GP and after she realised I had lost a few kg in weight , I was out on a 2 week cancer referral for a Colonoscopy, which I had on 7th February.

They removed two Polyps , 1, 3mm in size , the other 8mm in size . Both of these Polyps were found in the Sigmoid Colon and have been sent off for Biopsy . All other parts of my colon were clear , and those was no sign of Diverticulitis, which was their initial diagnosis.

I continued to have abdominal pains for a few days after the Colonoscopy, but now a week after my colonoscopy, I have no more abdominal pain , and regularity is better than it was . I still pass red blood occasionally and experience pain when poo’ing , but I am collected some anal fissure cream later .

Question

Has anyone else had abdominal pain , resolved by the removal of a polyp?

I noticed that the sigmoid colon is on 3cm in diameter and I had a Polyp at almost 1cm , and wondered whether the pain and constipation was caused by almost a 1/3 of that section of my colon being obstructed.

Thank you for your help

hello, usually polyps with this size is not a concern. But I know colonoscopy can help in a lot of ways, how is your biopsy?

Should be benign for both polyps rights.0.8mm is not consider big anyway so everything is good :)

hi,

Sorry for everything you’ve gone through. I have had very similar symptoms without the blood. After removal of 4 polyps 11mm x3 and 1 smaller one I don’t have right sided pains anymore. The polyps were in my caecum which is on the right hand side . My pooing is a lot more regular - no constipation and not so much urgency. I hope this helps and best wishes. I had an anal fissure many years ago and had to have a minor op to stop the bleeding . All ok now . 👌

Thank you . Good to see your abdominal pain was relieved by the removal of the Polyps

Hi, I think you should go back to your specialist if you are still seeing blood. It could be haemorrhoids and constipation that causes the blood. Make sure you drink lots of water, fibre and exercise.

Thank you Joyce . They did not see any hemarhoids during the colonoscopy. They turned the camera around to check . My GP thought it could be caused my fissures as they can be like paper cuts and hard to spot .

Hi Justdoit. I can feel you. I had fissures as well after a few episodes of constipation. It's good to see you are seeking advice and 2nd opinion. I had 2 coloscopy in 2021 due to one pre-cancerous polyps was found and removed in coloscopy. I went to a different specialist because I was still gassy, constipated and bleeding afterwards. They found haemorrhoids and fissures, and this is confirmed in my 3rd colonoscopy. I was so much better after half of the haemorrhoids was removed. I wish the complete diagnosis was given to me at first.

Hi Justdoit2015,

You're getting some great feedback. I would probably go back and get checked again if the blood is continuing even if it is "blood occasionally". You can give it some time, but to have blood and guess at it being a fissure because nothing was seen really doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy🤔. If it was a fissure, it was probably there independently from the polyps. Was there blood before the abdominal pain? Blood in the stool needs to have a definitive answer.
