Swollen Face Nodes?

wellbeingwarrior profile image

Is it a thing? Has anyone experienced it? Just above the jawline near the ear? I've done some googling and it appears possible. I've never seen anyone in here talking about that. Visible swelling on one side of the face with no idea why.

Asking for a friend... worried about turning into Elephant Man....😆😜😜

Hi warrior, That area is near your parotid gland. It may be an intraparotid lymph node or inflammation in the parotid or a cyst or swelling in the parotid. Is it a cyst? It may or may not be related to your CLL. How long has it been there. An otolaryngologist (Ear Nose and Throat Doctor) might be able to evaluate it better. Did you see your oncologist and show it to them? What stage in your CLL are you as far as treatment etc .

I had swelling beneath jawline more in the neck that was a lymph node. Face has few, if any, lymph nodes.

Hi Lovecures, thanks for replying!

Yes that's right, it's around my Parotid area. Definitely not a cyst, it's fleshy and raised as if I had been belted there by something, but I havn't been belted! 😃😃

When I googled for nodes in the face I could see that there is actually a network on the side of the face so became very curious whether this was possibly a "random CLL thing" (hence asking here if it had been a thing for anyone else??) and I realise also it may not be related!. I have my Haematologist appointment this week to review CT scan results, and will raise it and ask about it. 👍

(I've not had treatment).

Hi warrior,

I know a guy from this website who developed lumps on one side of his face, rather suddenly. He said he felt like Frankenstein’s monster, but other people didn’t seem to notice. Eventually, he was treated (V+O) and they went away.

Thanks DRM... sounds like it could be possible. Lucky I have long hair that hangs down the sides of my face, makes a good curtain to hide shit that shouldn't be there. 😀

Hi wellbeingwarrior, yes, I displayed swollen nodes all around my neck, jaw, throat and collarbone prior to treatment. My neck was swollen as wide as my jaws and it was highly uncomfortable. I experienced vertigo along with it until treatment quickly put a stop to it. I didn't turn into the Elephant man but I wore a neck scarf for awhile because I was self-conscious about it. I was told by my oncologist it was more about SLL at the time. All the best to your friend!

Ha ha, my friend says thanks Chris 😜, I have one on the same side of my neck and in both armpits (that I know about) and was curious whether what I was looking at was possibly one on the face??.

There are slightly swollen nodes below my ears, tight to the jawline.....It doesn't notice that much, because at 65yo, my face resembles a bag of spanners.

These nodes, love a jawline.

You cracked me up!!! I'm 64 and concur!!! Of course I have swollen knows under my jaw, neck and 1 collarbone. Most seemed to appear after my Covid shot in 2020 and that's when I became alarmed. Also just found out I'm hyperthyroid...good LORD.

Definitely possible. I had enlarged nodes all over my face (behind ears, just next to the earlobe on the face side - if that makes sense, under my jaw, at the back of my neck, around my collar bone). I was really "puffed up", didn't realise quite how bad it really was until I started treatment and they literally melted away. My face now looks so "skinny". The node close to my earlobe was there a couple of years before my diagnosis as I asked several doctors about it prior to being diagnosed. Nothing helped with the nodes but treatment but they would get bigger with infections, colds, vaccines, etc. If they appear quickly and suddenly, let your doctor know. I had a biopsy of one of them to rule out RT when it grew quite quickly. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks Poodle for the information about that. I'll do a check in with my Dr tomorrow and show her, when I see her for review. 👍

Are you on treatment now? How long and how are you doing! Thanks for info.

Yes, I had lymph nodes showing in my parotid gland prior to treatment.

Cheers NaturalWaze... seems it's possible, which was my question!

Can be caused by blocked duct from parotid gland as well as other suggestions given . Have you had dry mouth on that side.

Thanks Kensim9. It just appears to be random swelling. Hematologist reviewed it today, feeling both sides of my face, and said "I don't think that's a lymph node". (I still think it could be....).

She said that is where your Parotid Gland is - and when I said.. I don't think I have a Parotid Gland on that side.. she looked at me like I was a "special case" and smiled.. lol. But I went on to say that well over 20 years ago an ENT surgeon removed a benign tumour growing on my parotid gland and my understanding at the time was that the gland was also removed along with it. (I do know it took years for the nerves to find their way back on that side of my face- and I was left permanently with sweating on the outside surface just in that area of the face after eating (a common outcome for that surgery). I don't get dry mouth at all and I've practically not thought about it for years (or let it bother me).

Anyway. It might be my twisted sense of humour coming out - as I really enjoyed seeing first her reaction to my comment and then her reconsideration of it when I explained why.

What else happened today, that amused me, was I was asked at reception if I minded them taking a photo of me for their file. I burst out laughing and said, OK but I hardly think anyone is going to walk in here trying to impersonate me!!! She then told me I was the first person who had found it funny. So I said.. Lucky I find me funny!! ;)

My daughter used to have her parotid gland swell. The doctors told us to have her suck on lemons and tart candies. It gets the salivary glands working.
