Cold medication : Hi guys my hubby currently... - CLL Support
Cold medication
Before taking any other medications please discuss with your medical team!
Interactions between FCR and other drugs can become serious problems even over the counter meds should be checked,
In any case an infection such as a common cold should be reported to your medics whilst in treatment as it could escalate into sepsis.
It may also be that rather than a cold the symptoms may be actually be a side effect of the treatment.
You should have been warned about all this from your doctors!
Is hubby neutrophenic again? If so, suggest you get in touch with the hospital urgently as he’ll probably need antibiotics. Good luck. Xx
To be honest, there isn't much you can do about the course of a cold - apart from keep warm and carry on eating well. I had a (mild) cold when I started FCR and it went away on its own. Then I caught another about 2/3 the way through. That developed into pneumonia and I was unable to have the final cycle. So certainly keep an eye on the body temperature (and react immediately if it goes too high) and tell the consultant/cancer nurses. I did read that zinc supplements can help shorten a cold, but I think the evidence is sketchy - and probably was tested in people with normal immune systems. You need to be careful about using 'natural remedies' such as honey and lemon juice, because some honey can be a problem for people who are neutropenic. Drinking whisky during FCR isn't a great idea either (poor liver has a lot to deal with).
Take care,
John
You can ask the medical team about Sambucol (elderberry extract). I find it helps with colds.
