You need to make a decision after your discussion with GP. Suggest you read as much as you can so you are informed as to what that means for you. Who told you to see your GP and why?
If your GP ordered the tests they would automatically recall you if thought to be high risk.
My GP practice say if you have existing heart disease you are statistically at high risk of MI or stroke so would be advisable to lower cholesterol, however, it is not an individual risk factor that would be based on your QRisk - you can do it for yourself on line.
I am not an expert but I would guess that it is the ratio of HDL/LDL that would be of concern?
I have regular blood tests for my Chronic Kidney disease, and Giant cell ateritis and Polymyalgia, I do have hypertension which is well controlled
I didn't know that the cholesterol was being tested till I saw it on my print out, [ I haven't had one done for ages, perhaps that's why it was ordered ?] the print out also stated make a follow up appointment within 2 weeks,
I also have monthly tests for Mg meds and they always give me a 6 month check on cholesterol (mine is 6.5 down from 7.2) and call me in when it starts shooting up. I control solely with diet & exercise.
Did you ask for blood tests or did your GP request a blood test?
There are factors to consider, blood pressure, blood glucose as well as blood cholesterol!
Age, BMI, waist to height ratio are something to consider.
Life style change, regular exercise and food and Drinks intake control (no smoking) can help towards a healthy life.
Human body mechanisms work differently to differently people therefore a GP is the best person who knows your medical record can offer proper guidance!
For your next appointment write down all you questions to ask at the GP practice and also write down all the answers for future reference.
GP practice can give you a printout of your blood results for your record.
A good GP can show you qrisk calculation and offer to vary parameters to show the advantages.
You also post on PMR/GCA and vaculitis post so I assume you know all about them,? so well done on your varied career and I wont hesitate to ask your advice in the future re my health issues, if you don't mind ? have you thought of becoming a volunteer on this site, we need experts like you, especially if you were trained by the NHS
Look at school teaching, there are graduates, What qualification do one needs to teach primary school maths in most of the countries today?
Have seen this 30 years ago and this year!
Cholesterol, I cannot see high cholesterol in my body. There is high cholesterol in my blood, this is from blood test! Can I discuss high cholesterol?
People who made the qrisk calculator, "Is it from experience" or " Educational knowledge?". I gave some input to "JBS3" calculator on the Internet page. What I see today is very different!
I would say having some experience of the the disease/illness helps when asking that someone for their advice and experience of the disease in question. I only posted on this site for that reason to ask those with high cholesterol about their "experience" of statins that's all.
I had some good feedback from my usual site re statins, PMR/GCA which I have. I came on here as it was a cholesterol site and thought they would have more experience of taking stains, however as my blood/test is borderline I will take my chances without statins, [ although I will still keep my appointment with my GP to tell him of my decision ] so no need to come back on this site anymore.
Heart UK is a charity primarily interested in Familial Hyperlipidaemia and polygenic Hyperlipidaemia. Most people with those conditions will benefit from statins, probably in combination with other drugs.
A minority will have an adverse reaction to statins, but for each that does, many more will be saved from heart disease, heart attack, Stroke and 'snuffage'.
Talk to your GP & specialist, ignore scare stories in the Daily Mail!
TV, radio or News papers do report medical stories, there is a grain of troth on the report , it is up to the individual to make informed decisions after reading the report.
Medical information available to us over the years has changed a lot therefore talking a doctors and specialist to take medication for any medical condition is necessary.!
TV programmes where doctors themselves take part in experiment to give results on illness are very informative. News papers tell us real stories from peoples experience.
Heart UK Cholesterol charity is providing all what we need to understand on cholesterol. Only people who has been on medication can offer input on the advantages and disadvantages and the benefit.
That is purely a personal opinion. As with all drugs, statins have side effects, some are very serious for some people with other diseases. I will not take them and my GP's opinion was 'I don't blame you'.
I have lowered my cholesterol with diet and exercise, lifestyle changes first. High cholesterol is still a hotly debated subject and as this is a forum a think debate is appropriate.
I agree re the Daily Mail!
Hi, you need to see your GP.
Was this a blood test done by the GP or elsehwere - if elsewhere it may not be accurate.
High trigylcerides (though yours aren't really that high) can simple be an indication you need to cut down on alcohol. If you don't drink much, you may have a fatty liver, but only your GP can tell you.
