Hello. 60 year old (F) recently diagnosed with PBC (stage 4). I am due to have a couple of dental implants next week (has been ok’d with my consultant) but I’m getting confused as to what over the counter painkillers I can use. I’ve just disposed of everything in my bathroom cabinet and bought a box of aspirin but now I think I should get rid of them and buy some paracetamol instead. I would be grateful if someone could clarify what’s meds would be suitable for dental pain. Many thanks.
Over the counter painkiller: Hello. 6... - British Liver Trust
Over the counter painkiller

Aspirin not good with liver disease as it acts as a blood thinner and you don't want that. Safer with paracetamol - if under 60kg you need a reduced dose. Over 60kg you can take up to the recommended daily dose. (This was what hubbies liver specialist told us when we enquired after he sustained a painful knee knock cycling).
If in doubt always ask your specialist.

Hi
I was diagnosed two years ago and had lengthy discussions with my PBC specialist about pain medication. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen at all costs. You can take paracetamol for a few days. But if needed, an alternative pain medication to ibuprofen is Naproxen, you need a prescription from your GP and you when with a second medication called Omeprazole which protects your stomach from taking pain medication. When I’ve needed it I take all of those three combined for a few days and it’s either. And my GP and Specialist approved, they don’t want you to suffer unnecessarily - and in your case, especially after potential painful dentistry work. Good luck
hi
I ended up with auto immune hepatitis due to my liver taking a big hit over a dental problem. I had multiple courses of strong amoxicillin and took too many painkillers. Ibuprofen, paracetamol , you name it. My doctor reckons it was due to amoxicillin and ibuprofen and doesn’t recommend ibuprofen . Paracetamol is ok but stay within the guidelines. Hope it works out for you xx

Thank you. I would have contacted my consultant but last time I had a query they took over a month to get back to me and only did so then because I contacted PALS.
