Elevated Alk Phas after being on antibiotics

Hello everyone. I’ve been on your off and on for the past few years. I was diagnosed with PBC, in 2016. All of my liver enzymes have been with a normal range, of course, except my Alk Phas my doctor told me it would never be within normal range. It’s always run about 150. Plus or minus. But this time when I went for my six month labs. It was 233. I’m just wondering if my liver disease is progressing, or has anyone else had their enzymes go up, due to being on antibiotics? I recently had dental work. And oral surgery. So I was on two rounds of Antibiotics Any input would be appreciated.

Hi! I have noticed my ALP spiked up considerably after I had a hernia repair. It was in the 300's but my GI doctor said it had nothing to do with it. After a few months it came down into the 180's and last time we checked it in Dec. it was 209. Not great. I have taken antibiotics quite a few times for more than my fair share of dental issues and didn't really notice a spike. Mine seem to spike for no reason that I can see. I should add that I have cirrhosis and my reality is different from yours. I hope your liver settles down soon.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I too have cirrhosis due to the PBC. Mine too, has gone up and down. For no apparent reason in the past. But it’s never gone this high. You have reminded me of that. And I appreciate it. I will repeat my labs in three months and see how they are. Wishing you the best in your journey. Just on a personal level. After six years of dealing with it. I have found that keeping my stress level down, is the best thing I could do for myself. Sending you Many good wishes!!!Lorraine

It isn’t easy That’s for sure. I practice hog and that has helped me a great deal.

HAHAHAHA

We would encourage you to request repeat blood test in a few months to re-assess. Your hepatologist or GP should be able to do this.

If the elevation persists your hepatologist may wish to review your medication/weight/ treatment.

Mine always went up if I had an infection. Or antibiotics but returned to its usual level within a few weeks.
