Hi all, I have holiday insurance with my bank, I rang them last year to update them that I had fibrosis of the liver and they said everything stays the same on my insurance, fast forward a year and Consultant says I now have early stage Cirrhosis, I haven't informed the insurance of my new diagnosis, but I've now booked a couple of holidays abroad for this year. I'm not sure whether to risk leaving it and leave the insurance the same or let them know ? I was thinking if i had to go into hospital abroad ( say for a broken leg) would i still be covered with it not being my liver.. I went on staysure insurance to get a quote and it was quite pricey for a year insurance. Any thoughts on this ??,

Holiday insurance??

Hi lola , I have a few holidays booked , I go through a company called 'paying too much " for my travel insurance they covered me last year and this year with full disclosure £60.single European trip, what i would suggest is speaking to your hepatologist team ,that's what I do regardless ,once I'm given the all OK to fly I'm more relaxed, I did notice from a previous post you mentioned having low platelets? That's an indicator of a risk to bleeding , im sure all will be fine but it's best never to leave things to chance . Best wishes linda x
Thank you for information, I'll check out the insurance company you went with. Kind Regards
Tina x
Oh I wish I waited till I paid for my travel insurance. I paid £253 for mine and family for 1 week cruise. I’ll make a note for next time x
I only found the site by looking online , I've never claimed on the insuresnce but I have all my paperwork for this years holiday insurance, same economy as last years via paying too much .. yes keep the details for your next vacation x have a great cruse . My best wishes, linda x
Hi, I too have holiday insurance as a benefit with my bank. I pay £126 additional annually for worldwide cover. I am 5 years post tx with hypertension. I would ensure that you have it in writing/emails that there is no extra charges for the medical information you have given them. Hope that helps👍
Have you tried to get a quote elsewhere? I used travelinsurancesaver.co.uk and it was really reasonable. I can’t actually recommend their claims service etc as I never claimed but maybe worth shopping about. I know you do have the banks one but another one (thats reasonably priced) with everything disclosed may give you peace of mind xx
hello.
I have travel insurance with my Building society. Does this cover health as well. I’ve never really looked into it. Wondered if it was similar to yours. X
Hi, yes mine covers health, but you have to declare your health problems if they have changed since you had your policy, mines with Barclays and last year when it was fibrosis nothing needed changing bur now it's cirrhosis I have to tell them, I'm getting a few quotes from others companies before I ring them on Monday. So far a company (which was recommended to me ( paying too much) is coming out the best prices.
Hi I was diagnosed with cirrhosis march 23 had internal bleed end of Jan 24 and no one will insure me a year till after the bleed, am going away in march and paid £125, I declared everything which I don’t think is bad considering no one would insure me before
Hi LolaBow
Just make sure you aren’t awaiting any significant test results or referrals. The companies I tried wouldn’t insure me if I was.
Also - and I found this really odd - my bank would insure me for all of the 12 conditions I had to declare except anything to do with my transplant. So basically I felt I had to insure elsewhere. In any case now I am 70 the bank stops their “free” insurance.
Good luck

Millie09I am in the same position as you.
I received an extortionate quotation from Staysure so I went online and I have insured with Total Protection Insurance. This company take on board medical conditions and are very well priced. I am paying a fraction of the Staysure quotation. I would call them and tell them about your diagnosis and you will be pleasantly surprised.
we had a similar conversation …..we hadnt got around to the insurance but had booked the hol. A kidney problem I had kept quiet about now seems urgent. We had to cancel the holiday and lost £750. A lesson learned. If i was you I would try and update your current insurance, if they will allow or try Staysure. It would b extremely costly if anything occurred whilst you are away.
I think you need to be careful. Sorry, I can't find the link now but I read recently about a guy who had a heart attack on holiday being refused a payout because he hadn't told them about a torn ligament in his knee. Totally unrelated, but it seems his later complaint to the ombudsman was not upheld. They sided with the insurance company, saying their contract was clear. Absolutely everything must be declared or you're not covered for anything. Insurance companies seem to seek out every possible loophole these days to avoid paying out.
That is SCANDALOUS. the insurance company will do anything to avoid paying out. I would have felt they should have had to explain why they claim was rejected unless there's a direct relationship between a knee problem (perhaps causing a fall that causes a heart attack - I'm just thinking aloud) you have to be so careful about declaring medical conditions. If in doubt get them to put in writing specifically what you are NOT covered for.
Hi LolaBow,Like you, we have travel insurance included in our bank account (Nationwide). Last year, I wanted to check that we were well covered so I rang them up. They were happy to cover my husband's psoriasis, hyperactive thyroid and osteoarthritis but as soon as I said cirrhosis they instantly refused to cover him. He has oesophageal varices but these have been banded and he has never had a bleed. His cirrhosis is NASH/MASH stage 2. He also has splenomegaly and low platelets. I was disappointed with Nationwide and what felt like a knee-jerk reaction (they just would not budge at all even though my husband's consultant said he was fine to travel). I ended up going to AllClear and paid £600 for multi-trip insurance to Europe. As far as I can tell, this is very comprehensive insurance. We made 4 separate trips to France last year, so that's £150 per trip. I just don't feel that I have any option.... I also see the insurance as being for me rather than him as if he did end up in hospital, the insurance would help me to manage that and get him home if necessary. Do let us know on here what you find in terms of alternatives. Best of luck!
Hi Lola, travel insurance is horrendous expensive for anyone suffering from liver related ailments. My husband is 12 years post transplant but it's still thousands of pounds to insure. Travel insurance companies take into account all historic illnesses even those resolved by the transplant itself. We've never claimed in all the years we have travelled the world cruising, flying and motorhoming. It's a total rip off and I'm sure lots of people are not completely honest when they declare their medical history. However you do need to tell them about your illnesses or they will blame you and wriggle out of and future claims. Fingers crossed they are going to be fair with but I wouldn't get my hopes up.
Hi LolaBow. I'm always worried that included insurance deals with bank accounts- can be very basic and sufficient for those with no long term or chronic conditions. Depending on your age you may have had a parent or child in the British Military. If this is the case you could be elligible for membership and very attractive discounts and terns for holiday cover, with The Forces Pension Society. Look for their website to see what dealsyou could be looking at for your self
