Travel insurance?

I don’t want the post to get too long so please ask if you need more onfo.

12 months ago at the end of this month was the end of a very bad few year for me which ended with US and fribroscamn diagnosis of possible cirrhosis with fibroscan f4 fibrosis (I seemed to get different view from consultant / docs as to whether still fibrosis or cirrhosis)

Anyway 12 months of complete abstinence, life overhaul etc, my consultant at fibroscan in feb was over the moon, indicating when I questioned that not only was I reversing, but basically, all was well! To say over the moon is an understatement!

With initial diagnosis hanging around I wanted confirmation from consultant as to my position before applying for travel insurance for this year. His letter received today states F1 fibrosis, no abnormalities portal whatsits nothing, all normal except it does state still enlarged at 17cm. Only advise is continue abstinence (no fear!).

My question is when applying for travel insurance it asks for ongoing medical issue, when you click yes, it asks about liver and the. Basically, you are stating you have liver disease..

I might be wrong but fibrosis 1 is fairly mild and couldn’t this be lived with in someone who “drinks normally” and simply not have been picked up?? Do I class this as a liver disease on travel insurance? It’s not something that’s going to be an issue over a two week hol in France I don’t think….

Any advise for anyone in similar situation?

Many thanks!

I have decompensated Cirrhosis, Ascites and Oedema, and was diagnosed in August 2021 (what you would refer to as Stage 4). A kind person on the Forum recommended Coverwise (apologies that I can't remember who) and I ended up paying £141 for annual cover for Europe (not worldwide) for two people, myself aged 56 and my Partner aged 53, generally healthy. I thought that was quite cheap. Yes there were questions to answer, but the main one was had I been in hospital in the last 12 months. Sounds like you've only been in as outpatient in the last year, which doesn't count. You can change the answers before submitting for a final quote - it gives you an idea of costs based on different responses. Worth a try, because the big companies can be VERY expensive.

Thanks very much for this - I’ll give them a try.. I was really wondering if this diagnosis of fibrosis stage f1 was deemed as a “medical issue” and should be flagged in my travel insurance going forward or whether I just now take out “normal” insurance… just a thought really…Thank you for replying!

Bear in mind if anything does happen, Insurance companies will use any excuse not to pay and that they will be able to access your past medical history in its entirety.

Out of interest. Say I needed to claim for something completely not medical, such as bags being lost, they wouldn’t delve into medical for that claim I suppose??

Wouldn't have thought so. Only if you claim against medical expenses.

Ok but if the insurance company asks about medical belive me if you do not say the truth, they will simple deny your claims if any possibility. I would just provide information about your fibrosis stage F1 regardless it is true or not. They will know it anyway.

Yehhhhh, my head did already think that I suppose, I just hoped otherwise…You’re both right, I’ll declare and take the hit to be safe. Thanks both for your help!

If you take “normal” insurance and you end up in hospital whilst travelling, the insurance company simply wouldn’t pay out for a “pre-existing” condition. It’s just not worth the risk in my opinion…

I think the issue here is dishonest answers could lead to a very expensive hospital stay whilst abroad. If you tweak the answers to get a better quote and something happens whilst travelling, the insurance companies will do anything to get out of paying!! It’s just not worth the risk, better to declare over the top than keep anything on the QT

Hi,Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Just for clarity, it wasn’t that I would be dishonest, more was F1 fibrosis a condition that needs to be flagged to insurance. Also for clarity, by the grace of god, I don’t have cirrhosis, I have f0-f1 fibrosis due to complete abstinence and healthy living for over 12 months.

But I too was concerned about not declaring. Managed to get cover with declarations for whole family for £60!!! Thank you all, I wouldn’t have felt comfortable flying otherwise and probably not enjoyed my holiday very much xx

Did you manage to figure everything out? I hope so, I think it's awful to experience something like that. I'm really into travelling, I enjoy going on various food tours like secretfoodtours.com/nashville/ and explore new places, and something like that would definitely ruin the whole trip for me.
