Supplement confusion

Hi there

I’m sure this has been asked many many times but I have NAFLD and read somewhere that a B vitamin complex tablet a day can be helpful. Would anyone know if this is safe to take? I also wanted to take an Omega 3 supplement but again can’t find any definitive advice on whether it’s safe?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Honeysuckle123, welcome,

(Fellow NAFLD-er, and yes, some of the apparently conflicting information out there can seem confusing).

I prefer to obtain my B vitamins and Omega-3 from my diet.

Below are the resources which I have found helpful when trying to improve my diet on these two fronts:

nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-...

nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/f...

nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/h...

nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/h...

It is important to also read the BLT website guidance in this area too:

britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

Fear not, there are no silly questions here - we are each bound to duplicate our concerns on this forum as we learn to improve our liver health and begin to navigate our respective treatment pathways.

Best wishes.

Thank you so much for your reply Quiet! I’ll have a read of these resources. Sometimes I feel like I’m sending myself mad trying to work out the best things to do.

Supplements that have worked well for me are B2 - Tudca - Turmeric - Apple Cider Vinegar

what kind of results did you see with those supplements

I reversed my NAFLD from a CAP of 180 within 6 months. I also implemented the fasting and cardio/strength training.

I also found fasting and eating once a day or twice within a 4 hour window really helped massively! Reversed my NAFLD within 6 months when I implemented this.

Thank you so much Kyle, I’ll definitely have a look at all of this 🙏

I was told by my consultant definitely NO fasting just the small meals four or even five times a day.

I can only go by my experience and the data I considered when approaching this. But eating 4 or 5 small meals a day seems completely counter productive. I would advise googling; autophagy, fasting, high protein and high fat meals, carb insulin spikes, fasting effects on the liver, burning body fat not dietary fat.

Most people’s diet ensure that they have adequate nutrients and vitamins without having to take vitamin supplements. Vitamin D in this country is probably the one that people struggle with as we don’t get that much sun, in the winter particularly, for the body to process sufficient vitamin D. I can see from this and previous posts that you have some liver damage and the advice in one of the earlier replies on diet is therefore crucial if you want to avoid supplements. Your liver won’t be quite so efficient in getting enough vitamins into your body so ensuring that you have a good balanced diet will help it perform all its tasks. Talk to your doctor about supplements before you take them if you feel you want to. I have cirrhosis caused by alcohol and when first diagnosed took a lot of supplements - vit B12, folic acid, thiamine and multi vitamins. I don’t touch alcohol now and my liver function has improved dramatically plus the alcohol is not stripping my body of nutrients. I get all my vitamins through my diet, apart from vit D which I supplement in the winter.

Thank you for your reply Aotea, I might have a chat with the gp

Yes that sounds sensible plus it may be worth asking if they’d refer you for some dietician support to advise you on your diet. I had so much help from mine at the start, she gave me specific tailored advice on my daily intake requirements and then helped me put that into practice.

Yes I have actually asked for an appointment but I just don’t know how long the waiting list is here unfortunately.

It would be worth checking when you see your GP that a referral has been made. You may only need a very brief intervention from a dietician (as I had). It gave me enough information for me to then successfully adapt my diet and meals.

When my GP makes a referral on things - I can sometimes see the status of the referral via the NHS website version of the NHS app (pending, waiting list, date the referral request expires etc.).

I share; as nobody had told me it was a feature of the NHS app (I discovered / noticed it by exploring the different menus when I was checking for a separate upcoming appointment).

Wow, no I didn’t know that was a feature. I’ll definitely have a look.

Hello! My husband was prescribed any vitamins which were lacking right from the get go. I asumed they could tell by his bloods what was needed but i might be wrong. If it was me id ask at my next appointment. 🙂

If you are taking Lanzoprazole or Omeprazole they can impede vitamin absorption in which case you might need to take supplements. Probably best to check with GP or pharmacist.

We have an official GP Practice Pharmacist (some Practices seem to have access to one even if they don't have an in-house dispensary onsite).

Their Pharmacist had access to what had been going on (low vit D, despite appropriate diet and time outdoors - following impact of another medication) and (via a booked telephone conversation); helped me to know which of the over the counter dosage level vit D available would be recommended for me.

The Practice also arranged a follow up blood test after 4 weeks of first taking the vit D - to double-check it was not interfering with my calcium level.

I didn't know beforehand: that type of call was a potential option. So, I have spread the word among my older relatives - one of whom has also benefited since: when they were concerned about a new-to-them medication about which they had complex medication worries not covered by the patient leaflet (very helpful) as: a) their village doesn't have a pharmacy shop where they could walk in and talk it over with a Pharmacist, and b) their GP Practice is quite a long car journey away).

my doctors told me that the liver will struggle to absorb various vitamins so they placed me on the purest kind with no GMO or artificial ingredients to help with immunity and energy. Don’t skip meals as liver needs the work. Also at my age melatonin is in low supply so they told me what to take there to help with sleep. I sleep great and my energy has been fine so far! Thankful for their advice.

thank you so much Simba. Wow, your doctor sounds fab. I’m not sure where you live but we’re lucky to get a f2f appointment here let alone be prescribed any vitamins! I do suffer with chronic insomnia which doesn’t help anything. I’m so glad you’re feeling good.

I am blessed with my doctors here in Dallas Texas. My heart breaks often while reading some of the stories here. Like you need a degree in jumping hoops. I’ll be praying for you to make great decisions and solve your insomnia.
