Hi Happy bunny. I will be interested to see what replies you get. I started the same process yesterday afternoon. I have NASH with cirrhosis (but with a Child-Pugh score of 5 which is good) and have had oesophageal varices banded about 18 months ago. Never had a major bleed from them. The first firm would cover me for my other health problems (diabetes on insulin, high cholesterol on medication etc) but the liver disease was excluded. The second firm would not give a quote until I had the results of my routine blood tests done by my GP, due to get those on Thursday this week. The trouble is that I am usually waiting for a test to be carried out or a hospital appointment or a blood test.... !! They cannot keep waiting for the result of the next test! I have a list of insurance companies who will cover people with known medical problems (obtained from Macmillan when my husband was ill with cancer and probably on their web site), and will try them next. The trouble is that the people who ask all the medical questions have no idea or understanding of the disease - they just ask the questions on their screen! I have hoping to visit my daughter in Australia for Christmas. I have heard of people who pay more for their insurance than they do for the holiday. It is so important to me that I get cover as it is much more expensive for my daughter to come here with her husband and 4 children than for me to fly there. Ugh!!!!

You could try these miatravelinsurance.co.uk/ who claim to "specialise in affordable travel insurance for people with pre-existing illnesses". Or there is a company you can link to from the Liver4Life website and a company called All Clear. The British Liver Trust have a list but cover will vary depending on the answers you give about fibrosis/cirrhosis etc. Have you tried the Post Office? postoffice.co.uk/sites/defa...

Or a company called World First world-first.co.uk/home/trav...

Hi happy bunny. I've had the same issue too. Quoted hideous amount for a week in the sun. Try JD Travel. You have to ring them rather than online but they got me a decent price for worldwide cover. You have to be put through a medical screening with tokio marine and pay a separate premium to them to cover your specific conditions. I just paid about £150 for an annual policy which included £30-ish for the specific cover. I have portal hypertension, varices (no bleeds) and some fibrosis (non-alcohol related) and am purely being monitored by the hospital rather than having any investigation or treatment other than propanalol meds. Obviously the premium will vary depending on your specific circumstances and conditions but I found them really helpful.

Hope it helps!

Hi falamanala,

Can you say a bit more about the process of dealing with JD travel please? I've wondered about using them, but so far have not plucked up courage. I have become quite phobic about Travel Insurance, largely because of the ignorant things said by some of their [so-called] medical advisors. I find it all very upsetting, especially as I don't really have PBC, just an unfortunate 'labelling' [diagnosis] by a consultant - I also no longer know what does and doesn't count as pre-existing medical conditions. Am I supposed to mention things that happened decades ago and which have never bothered me since? My GP says not, but I've seen companies who list all sorts of things in their 'All these are covered for free' lists.

Do JD Travel always use Tokio Marine, or are they the company used because it best fitted your conditions? I was under the impression you told JD Travel everything, and then they directed you to the best TI insurer for your conditions - seems I was wrong. Please email me direct if you don't want to talk on this site.

All advice gratefully received as this is making life hell and causing problems with my partner - I'm almost wondering if I should declare TI Phobia as a pre-existing!

Hi GrittyReads

I found them really helpful. Its the second time i've insured through them. The first time I was still having tests and they recommended a single trip policy as every time something changed you needed to let the insurer know about it as it may affect cover. Now that I'm just being monitored and they've ruled out cirrhosis it was a lot easier. I think you are right and they go to the medical underwriter most suited to your circumstances. For me it was Tokio Marine on both occasions. Yes, they are following a script of questions but this seems pretty normal to me, the tokio marine screening was more intuitive and I didnt feel i would hit the point where "computer says no!". In short, you wont lose anything except your time in making the call and you may find you can get cover at sensible prices. When I first tried them I was still being assessed by the hospital for suspected cirrhosis, really didnt have a clue what I was diagnosed for and what was a suspicion / investigation. Even with that information they got me a good premium on a single trip policy when others were quoting in the £1,000's or saying they were unable to cover.

Hi Happy Bunny I have the. Same problem. The price of insurance is unbelievable. I have now decided to insure myself for the essentials and diabetes and my asthma. So far no problem

HI Jackie,

I'm curious (see my reply to falamanala). Do you mean you got special, separate insurance: that is, other than through a TI company? If so, I'd love to know how to do that, as I just no longer trust TI companies.

If you mean that you did use an ordinary TI company, but then chose not to have cover for the conditions you did not feel to be essential, can you name the companies who allowed you to do that, please? The last company I used would not allow me not to have things covered, they all had to be included.

All advice gratefully received, email me off-site if you don't want to name companies on this site. Thanks

Hi. I had a frustrating day yesterday, but finally got 2 or 3 firms who were willing to cover my medical problems including the NASH with cirrhosis and history of the banding of varices. I booked in the end with SAGA - it was about £360, for a month in Australia, visiting my daughter, travelling alone. None would give me an annual insurance policy and some companies would cover everything except the liver (they covered the diabetes etc. without a problem). All the firms seemed to use the same questionnaire I got the hang of which questions were coming next! Have you got yours sorted yet?

I am a member of the nationwide building society and have overseas travel insurance with them. The cost is very reasonable. Give them a visit.

Nationwide excluded cover for my liver problems (NASH cirrhosis) - they would cover me for any of my other problems. However always worth a try!
