liver issues ?

hi guys

I have had a constant pain in my upper right side of my stomach near the liver . It sometimes radiates down to hip and groin but mainly in the top / mid stomach . I have ultra sound next week so hoping that there isn’t anything too concerning . My lft have been done a couple times and mainly fine

It can be sore to lie on my side . However the pain mainly goes away during the day and only appears either though the night or in morning

I do have hypertension which doesn’t help things .

any thoughts

A

Dear Edinburghgy57

We have edited your post as it goes against our Community Guidelines.

Please read the pinned posts at the top right of the first page on the forum to see the rules and guidelines about making posts on this forum. This is about posting health information, more specifically:

“In this respect the British Liver Trust asks that users do NOT post any test results or ask for specific comment on such. Test results vary according to both the individual’s whole health and the laboratory analysing the results and should, therefore, always be interpreted by the user’s own doctors/health care professionals.”

We suggest talking this through with your own doctor or health care professional.

If you [are in the UK and] would find it useful to talk things over, our nurse-led helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm on 0800 652 7330 (excluding bank holidays)

Best wishes

Have your Gallbladder checked

Edinburghguy57 profile image
Edinburghguy57 in reply tosophiaS1980

Think they see doing that too as well as liver .

It could be connected to your gallbladder. I get a pain in those areas and I have a contracted gallbladder with stones . The phrenic nerve is on the right side so the pain can radiate up and down . An ultrasound is the best test to see what’s going on with the GB initially .

Hopefully it’s maybe just that as it seems the less worse diagnosis

Sadly so many issues associated with gallbladders too . My mum passed away with bile duct cancer which is gallbladder related . If it’s simply malfunctioning then removal seems to be straight forward but you can have issues after removal too with IBS but as long as you stick to a fat free or low fat diet then you shouldn’t have too many issues

Do you have liver disease, i ask because it seems more ppl with liver disease get stones?

I’m still waiting on the results of my CT scan 12 weeks ago and my biopsies from endoscopy . I have no idea if I have liver disease though I’d be surprised if they came back and said the liver was perfectly fine . My bloods were clear for liver issues but that means nothing from what I’ve been told . I do have a dilated duct but I think the bile is bypassing the gallbladder and has caused my gastritis and duodenitis .

Wow! you been waiting for 12 weeks, can't you look on the patient portal and get your results? You are right bloods mean very little but certain ones can tell you a little about your liver, Platelets are usually low or low normal, about 90% of ppl with advanced liver disease have low to low normal. INR/Alk.Phosp. but mostly platelets, I have never seen anyone with cirrhosis with high normal platelets.

I’m in Scotland , sadly we don’t have the patient portal but I wish we did . I’ve called x3 times now and spoke to the consultants secretary and I keep being told they will be with me shortly . I’m getting really frustrated especially as I keep having pain . I can only assume ( I hope correctly ) that there is nothing too serious although I would have thought a contracted gallbladder with stones and a dilated duct was serious enough 🤷🏻‍♀️

What do you mean “ platelets “ count on liver blood tests ?

Along with the Liver Function Tests did your Doctor run FBC's too? FBC is full blood count and examines numbers of the various types of white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets.

Platelets are important in blood clotting and often in folks with liver disease they are reduced (and blood clotting time increased) as the spleen tends to start gobbling them up and it in turn becomes enlarged.

A standard set of exploratory bloods (as spouted on every episode of 'Casualty') usually involves - LFT'S, FBC and U's and E's (urea snd electrolytes a.k.a. kidney function tests).

Im not sure who advised you bloods mean nothing? Bloods give Drs a good clinical indication, in the case of the Liver, of how well it is functioning and how well the body is managing clinically with whatever your symtom or complaint is. Believe me, when bloods are out of range, they do jump about - whether thats heart, lungs, liver, infection - whatever !!🙂

Sorry , maybe I’ve not explained correctly and I think this was my point . The bloods on the day advised and to quote GP ‘not raised’ indicating no liver issues but what I’m trying to say is this result is only an indicator at the time the bloods were taken and not necessarily the only indicator of liver health . I’ve read instances where people have had normal liver function tests but then have had further tests , CT etc to suggest otherwise . Is this not correct ?

Yes, ok. I kind of get what youre Dr is meaning, but we get lots of people on here getting panicky about this - when they have normal blood results but still scared/cinvinced they have something seriously wrong with the liver. The LFTs would show for example a bi-product of the liver in the blood which indicates that the actual function of the liver is or isnt working. So in theory, yes the liver might still have a physical issue but if these arent showing in the blood the liver is managing perfectly well and doing its usual job. I feel like im getting out of my depth a bit- lol 😂 im not medically trained!

I just dont want a whole new influx of posts where people are panicking despite good bloods!

Take care

Hope you get sorted soon🤗

Apologies if I’ve caused any problems . I’m happy to delete my posts alternatively , as you are admin , please feel free to delete on my behalf . Wasn’t my intention to cause anyone any confusion at all . Simply trying to understand my own medical issues

This is my understanding . In fact in blood tests your tests would need to be very much higher than the parameters defined as normal for each test for there to be concerns .

I had my ultra scan and it was very mild fatty liver . So just to be careful with diet which I will do . I did wonder as my liver blood tests were fine
