I think a lot of people where quite surprised by the success of the World Transplant Games this year. It’s a shame there wasn’t more media coverage for this most wonderful event.
There were some really ore inspiring stories, and I believe some people were drawn to tears by the sharing of these.
I was really impressed with 9-year old Phoebe Pace, who received her liver transplant at the age of just one-year old: itv.com/news/tyne-tees/2019...
And then there was 11-year old Amelia Green. Amelia really loves her Dad, as he is her hero, he’s also her split liver donor: facebook.com/C5News/posts/2...
But I think my hero is Derek
83-year-old Derek was one of Team GB’s oldest athletes to take part in the World Transplant Games last week. He received the gift of a liver 22 years ago.
Derek added to his medal collection winning two golds in the 100m and 200m sprints as well as silver in the ball throw and javelin. Amazing!
What an inspiration, and well done to all those who took part.
That is just amazing! What a great reminder to all of us what accomplishments are possible. It would be wonderful if more people could share this news and see what giving a second chance means to these fine athletes!
Richard64 - thank you for this beautiful post. Derek is a hero. His frailty and his strength are both visible in this pic. It is truly moving. I'm feeling better just for seeing it. Thank you for always finding something good to share.
If any one is interested in taking part in the Transplant Games, then I would wholeheartedly encourage it. Ok the worlds may be a bit beyond most of us, but anyone can take part in the British Transplant Games. Don't worry about how good or bad you think you are at anything. Just have a go, that's what its all about. Click on the link below to see some of the other members of the Birmingham Team. But each transplant centre will have their own. To get involved contact Transplant Sport and they will put you in touch with the relevant team manager.
Genuinely extraordinary people and just the kind of story you should rightly share and should be more widely celebrated .... Not just to lend invaluable support to those pre or post TP but to show potential doners of what full lives thier gift can afford .
