Enlarged liver back to normal size?

A few weeks ago I had a CT scan with contrast that showed an enlarged liver (GP said it was reaching my pelvis). All blood tests normal but I’ve been very unwell since then, chest pain, out of breath, very tired and loss of appetite. Had ultrasound today and showing normal size liver, I was surprised, it’s good news, but didn’t think it could happen so quickly. Does that mean that all OK and probably just had an infection or reaction to taking antibiotics?

That seems odd unless maybe the enlargement found with the CT scan was moderate & the ultrasound being less accurate didn't pick it up. The CT scan finding that your liver was enlarged to the extent of your GP saying it was reaching your pelvis & the way that you have been feeling warrants seeing a specialist for further investigation.

Thanks for your reply Edward. It does seem odd but like you say, may be the case that it wasn't so enlarged in the first place. The CT scan report just noted an enlarged liver with no other info. As I'm so new to this I wondered if maybe it's normal for the liver to return to normal so quickly? I really want to know why it got so large in the first place and why I've been feeling so poorly. I'm seeing a gastroenterologist today so will hopefully know more soon.

I don't think it is normal for an enlarged liver to return to normal so quickly but I'm not a doctor. Fatty livers take time to normalise. Livers can become enlarged or shrunken due to fibrosis or cirrhosis with enlargement (hepatomegaly) being more common but I've never heard of an enlarged liver returning to normal size over a few weeks. Hopefully the gastroenterologist will be able to work out what is going on.

My liver hasn’t regained its normal size in over two years.

Hi I haven’t been diagnosed yet with lupus (a long story there) but I have chronic inflammation of the liver which was picked up via biopsy but on an ultrasound it looks within normal range. I could be wrong as no doctor but I’m not convinced that ultrasound are great for picking up inflammation/enlarge all that great. It’s all depends on who does it I have 2 done in the same week and one person said my bile duct was 8mm and one said it was 12mm. That’s a huge difference in a short space of time.

Hopefully they are keeping an eye on it for you with a follow up

I've just seen the specialist and seems my enlarged liver is due to Riedel's lobe? Never heard of it and surprised that not discovered it before as have had many scans and xrays over my 42 years! Does anyone have any experience of this?
