I was diagnosed with NAFLD in 2018 while undergoing gallbladder removal surgery. I had been thin most of my life and had only “packed on the pounds” in the last 4-5 years, and wasn’t overweight at the time of the surgery, so she thought it was odd to see my liver so fatty.
My PCP sent me for ultrasounds, MRI’s and bloodwork, and until recently, there wasn’t any mention of an enlarged or fatty liver and my enzymes were always normal.
Then this year the ultrasound came back w an enlarged liver & it said mild fatty liver. Fibrosis bloodwork came back as high and in category F1-F2 w no NASH.
Went to a hepatologist and she did a fibroscan. It came back moderately fatty, but enzymes remain normal (AST 16, ALT 15). I don’t have high cholesterol or diabetes.
In the USA, they downplay NAFLD, so I just want to make sure there’s no reason for concern.
The hepatologist just said lose weight and I’ll be fine (I’m 35 pounds overweight).
I do have Primary Aldosteronism, so my blood pressure can be rather unstable. Could that cause any damage to the liver? Is there even damage to the liver at all if the enzymes are good? I read weight should be lost slowly. Would it be okay to lose 1 pound a week for the next 35 weeks and would that reverse the NAFLD?
