Hi Guys ..Can anyone recommend a travel insurance company which doesn’t cost the earth just because you have NAFLD 🤔

Lots of people who have more advanced liver disease than 'just' NAFLD seem to get good quotes from Staysure. Haven't any experience myself as we holiday in the UK.

wonderful thank you I will check them out . Do you happen to know why insurers charge us so much ?

No idea on something as common as NAFLD - obviously with cirrhosis there is the risk of bleeds from varices and similar which could involve overseas emergency health care, emergency plane landings but I don't know where the risk is with plain and simple NAFLD which is so rife in the general population that most folks who have it don't even know they have it.

I wouldn’t touch Staysure, had a very bad experience with them, we had to take them to Financial Ombudsman, still awaiting £3000 that they paid by mistake and took it back the following day

Morning Lindy.I've had lots of experience here (we all have our burdens to bear!!!). They all seem to differ depending on where you're going, in Europe Spain is the worst, something to do with health costs. America the same problem.

Saga have always been sensible, although this year I had problems with the Caribbean, and ended up using direct line because they weren't so fussy about destination.

It's all a pain but shopping around unfortunately, has always been fruitful.

Ps I'm one of the lucky ones, liver infection diagnosed in 2016 followed with a successful transplant in 2018.

Best of luck and don't give up .

Good luck with that. I have ARLD and they just laugh. If you manage to get insurance please put it on the site.

What part of the world?Try searching the comparison sites.

Also look at annual policy's.

For my wife and myself I got a year's Europe cover for under £121.

I declared high cholestetol, type 2 diabetis and cirrhosis.

They charged less than £2 extra!

Cirrhosis

Oesophageal varices

Diabetes type 2

Further to the declaration of your pre-existing medical conditions shown above, we are pleased to

confirm acceptance of cover at the additional premium of £1.97. This premium is included in the total

payment you’ve made for your travel insurance policy and reflected in the total amount written on your

policy certificate. This is on the proviso that you are fit to travel, not travelling with the intention of

obtaining medical treatment aboard and not travelling against the advice of a doctor.

I've just tried these (cirrhosis and on transplant list), they wouldn't touch me with a barge pole and I've had no varices and no hospital admissions in last year. Bizarre.

I don't think you will get cover if your on the TP list, it's too high risk

Friend of mine was helicoptered off a cruise twice ( heart attacks) and insurance paid out £125,000+ each time.

Needless to say he was unable to get insurance after that.

Total travel protection. By far the cheapest for liver transplant with some rejection. Their screening questions are much more thorough as they seem to know liver issues better. I was quoted £770 for Carribbean when staysure, saga, search sites were all over £3000.I didn't go but good to know I could!!!

I've stated before here : you have to shop around. I am currently with Rock (Tesco's underwriter)and got Annual worldwide cover for me and partner for £400 odd last year. Looking at renewal now and on their site I'm not able to get cover (no change in circumstances). I may get a better result on the phone. BUT here is a good source if you don't have to renew until NOVEMBER. If you have a family member who is or who has served in any of the three armed forces (they do the checks so you don't need to worry about that) you join the Armed Forces Pension Service (annual cost £43) and a significant benefit is that they have a good travel insurance scheme that gives ANNUAL WORLDWIDE COVER for you and spouse/partner for flat rate of £412.50 - without detailed medical questionnaire. They only need to know if you have a serious lung or heart condition or if you've been diagnosed with terminal cancer. No questions about liver or other issues. But their polices only run Nov to Nov. So if you insure let's say now for June you still pay the flat rate of £412.50 and then take out new policy from Nov. So it could be a good deal if you do have big problems getting cover elsewhere.

It really is a case of shop around. I found with some our age didn’t help others they were less bothered by the cirrhosis then the knee replacement op and the fact my husband was waiting on his other knee being replaced.

All so weird how they differ but thank you

in the past I have had travel insurance from Able2Travel and All Clear. I have just been insured by Avanti, who refused to insure me in 2018. So it’s always worth checking to see if they have changed their screening procedure. The list on this website is very useful. I was very impressed with a broker who compared insurers and got back to me very promptly. As I have an autoimmune condition that always has to be checked out by referring to a manager because it is not listed anywhere! Good Luck! I find this process very stressful!

The broker was J S Insurance and their number is 0800 0430020.

That policy was with “Goodtogo”.

I found they only asked basic questions about cirrhosis, had he had a transplant, was he on the transplant list, did he have varies had they been banded. Didn’t want to know if compensated or approved by consultant to fly.

Just amazes me how there are so many prices , depending on who you go with 🥴

Since my last post on this I thought I'd get round to taking out a new policy starting mid March. Im away for 5 days next week to Valencia. My current policy with Tesco insurance (using Rock underwriters) finishes in a couple of weeks and I'm going on a very overdue trip to Far East. No change in my details since 12 months ago, so I'm surprised they won't even cover me now. Tried Saga (no interest) Able2travel (forget it), 4 comparison sites ditto. Avanti were willing to charge me £850 for WW Annual cover but no cruising. So it was more expedient to go with the Armed Forces Pension service (per my previous post). No questions asked other than do you have terminal cancer diagnosis or Chronic Heart/lung problems) flat rate annual WW cover £412.50 plus annual membership fee of £43 for joint or single. Nothing is cheap nowadays but this way no issues with liver related history.
