The 12 Runs of Christmas

I haven’t posted for a while so perhaps you need an update on my Christmas Challenge. It runs from 1st to 25th December and I thought it might be an incentive to get out during colder, shorter, busier days. There’s also a naughty and nice list of challenges to complete so I wanted to get a few of these ✅

I started a bit late under doctor’s orders, and didn’t realise walking was an alternative straight away, but here are the first 6 jolly jaunts so far.

5 Dec - A chilly 5km along the seafront listening to a Christmas playlist for the first time, and I captured a pic of 7 swans a swimming ✅✅

8 Dec - A beautiful sunny day so I walked 4.5 k along the seafront watching young mums and dog walkers take advantage of dry and calm conditions, after all that rain. I also spotted knitted snowmen in the park. ✅

9 Dec - 33 mph southerlies, and pouring rain made an exhilarating parkrun along the prom, with huge waves crashing on the beach. There wasn’t much Christmassy about this one apart from Fenton, our parkrun bear appearing when the rain stopped, but it it was another 5km done and I was first in my very small age group. The challenge seeks a PB, but that’s as close as I will get before Christmas. ✅

10 Dec -     UpTheStanley ,     Oldgirlruns and I went to RHS Wisley to see Glow, where they illuminate the gardens in the evenings for the festive period. This was originally booked for stormy Thursday but we managed to change it to a drier Sunday. We walked, and marvelled at the beautiful sights, drinking hot chocolate with cream on top at the start, and a warming mulled wine along the route. I forgot to start my watch at the beginning but estimate 4.8km in all. Lots of Christmas trees here, but the one in the glasshouse was very different, created with pots of colourful bromeliads . ✅✅

11 Dec - 4.51 km on another bright sunny morning - I’ve got to take the opportunity while I can. I donned my Christmas Ho-Ho leggings and had bells on my shoes, jingling all the way. I ran this this one with UpTheStanley and Coaches Bennett and Puddicombe doing NRC run “Slow Down to Speed up”. ✅

14 Dec - After a few hectic days of appointments and Christmas frivolity I was desperate to tick another run off, so, unusually for me, I went for a quick 1.1km run in the dark. I clipped a light to my warm running top, and basically jogged around the block. I was checking out beautifully lit Christmas trees in bay windows of Victorian houses. ✅✅

So that marks the halfway point for me, with 6 more runs to follow.     Shake-and-run is also doing this challenge and will be running far further than me, with a HM and a 10k already run.

Enjoy your Christmassy runs everyone, but if it’s too busy to think about running, with everything else you’ve got to do, don’t beat yourself up about it. Christmas comes but once a year, and the runs will be waiting for you.

Post note. Amended since first issue as I missed my 5th run out. 🎅🏼

What a glorious write up, so cheery and festive. Well done Dexy on getting half way.

After the weekend I have now clocked up 8 outings , all of them runs. Yes there was a half marathon and a hilly 10k, but there were some very gentle 3ks as well, particularly post-HM when the muscles just needed a shake up. I’ve managed to deliver cards, drink mulled wine and get a PB but my naughty/nice list is looking a bit short. Tailchaser and I have some festive dressing up plans for this week and there is Parkrun on Saturday, but I’m going to struggle to get the other 2 outings as I have granny duties (he is only 5 but perhaps he will run round the park with me?) and a trip to the football (hubby knows how to treat a lady😳😳😳) to work around. I might just have to log the mile and half walk from the car park to the football ground.

My medal has arrived and is safe waiting to be hung up only if the challenge is completed.

Happy Christmas everyone xx

A walk to the footie is definitely allowed Shake-and-run , as is chasing toddlers on granny duties, so I’m sure you will earn that lovely tree dec. my parkrun friend has the bear, so they have sent all 3 designs out.

I’ve actually done an additional 2 now but I thought I’d better spread them into 2 posts.

Congratulations Dexy on those walks and runs, I am so happy that you are enjoying them, love the idea of having bells on your shoes and Ho Ho leggings, you must wear them at parkrun this Saturday, of course I wish you and UTS a very happy Christmas.

Breaking News Dexy5, I have just received a email inviting me to run next October at the Great Scottish run 10K, I have been accepted, this will be my first mass running event since I started running in 2018.

That is brilliant Al; I am sure you will love it. The Great Scottish Run is GSR, just like the Great South Run! I think yours is first.

Sounds like a lovely way to work up to Christmas and away from the stress and expense. A bit of competition with Shakes never goes amiss either 😂

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply toSandie1961

Ho-Ho-Ho , Shake-and-run will certainly be accumulating more kms Sandie.

No competition, just a lot of fun to get us out there and earn our Christmas decoration medals.

You'll never believe who overtook me on a bike ride this week...I was cycling downhill on a relatively quiet lane and I heard bells behind, sleigh bells? And I kid you not it was Santa! No reindeer pulling his sleigh, but a 4WD instead. He even gave me a wave. His sleigh was disappointingly empty though, but he looked like he was in a rush to get to his local workshop. 🎅

how wonderful. Yes he must be on his way to the North Pole to collect presents. 🎁

I bet you’re right about that!!! I finally got out for twenty minutes yesterday after a couple of weeks off (post flu/recovering from strained intercostal muscle) so I’m massively run deprived at the moment. Loving hearing what everyone else has been doing!!!
