A bit chilly

Decided to do a gentle 3k today. Set out just after 9am. It was overcast but the sun peeped out so I thought it might provide a little heat. Wrong!!!!

I was wearing my current favourite running outfit, short sleeved t shirt, 3/4 leggings, merino socks (above my ankles, the shorter ones weren't quite dry after being washed) and gloves. As we did our 'warm up' (not quite accurate today) walk the north easterly wind funnelled down the street. The shade from the houses either side didn't help either. I told myself I'd soon warm up when I started running.

We reached the fields. The path had dried out a lot since Wednesday, two days without rain meant we had a nice hard mud surface which was reasonably smooth. The idea of going slow didn't appeal, I needed to run fast and get the blood circulating.

As a strategy this seemed to work OK. After 5 minutes or so I no longer felt cold but the goosepimples on my arms told another story.

The sun came out and a hedge offered a respite from the stiff breeze and I was almost warm for a couple of minutes.

Starting off quickly meant I got progressively slower as the run continued. Positive splits. Another positive :)

PS the photo has nothing to do with the run, I just liked it. A lot of people turn up their noses at Southend-on-Sea but with light like this anywhere would be beautiful.

That's a fab pic and a lively run. The NRC cold run makes a good listen, with lots of tips. Firstly, a really good warm up indoors and when you set off still go easy as cold muscles are more vulnerable to injury. Next layers, which can be taken off as you get warm from the effort and look after the extremities. I started C25K last February and as my early weeks were more walking than running, I wore more clothing and nothing running specific, so now the winter is calling, running in cold weather and what to wear, is a totally new thing for me. I guess we just experiment and find what's right for us as individuals. Happy running 🏃‍♀️
