So I have definitely sinned. It’s been 8 days since my last run. The weather was part of the reason, but also it’s been one of those weeks. A glitch in the matrix! I’ve been out of phase. A disturbance of the space/time continuum!
So this morning I felt a bit better and got up to run. It’s got darker again! And also it was almost cold, I actually put my lightweight running tights on and my windproof jacket. The jacket had to come off for the last 1.5K but I don’t like to start a run cold.
Tea drunk, wardrobe faffage over, and out of the door. Definitely chilly on my warm up walk, maybe I should have worn my gloves! I’m glad I didn’t, my hands soon warmed up.
Off I go. I thought I was running slowly, but the first km clocked in at 8:05. Must mean the air quality was particularly good! I carry on at a similar pace, but I was conscious for the rest of the run that it was faster than I had intended. I tired earlier than I usually do and had to take a couple of walking breaks. That will teach me to have a week off and then start out too fast!
I turned left at the T junction for a 4K and took the brakes off a little for the last km. This route isn’t quite so downhill at the end as the 5K route, but I still managed to pull out one or two stops! I staggered to my steps to sit down and recover. As I ran past my Dad’s house where I’m staying, I noticed that the roofer had already started work on the garage roof. I wanted to make sure I was running effortlessly back to the house and not staggering back in a state of total exhaustion 😂 so I recovered for a good 5 minutes before loping like a gazelle for the 100m back to the house! I think he was impressed. 😊
No negative splits again, the inclines on that 3rd km get me every time!

Glad to see you back out again Jools, good run particularly with time off for good behaviour. Chuckled at the gazelle reference, would have done exactly the same myself! 😀
Nice to be back after a short break Jools2020, good run for you today, I bet that roofer thought that you had been running at that speed throughout the whole run. 🏃🏾 👍
Well done Jools, all runs are worth doing and you made good time it seems. I was also off running for 8 days and felt so much better after getting back out, as no doubt you did.Funny how we can always pull our style and pace together when we see someone we know - even if we are hanging on by a thread!
Stretch and relax, you’ve certainly earned it 😀oh that first kilometer must have been fun at that pace, I can’t get negative splits but am happy with a slightly faster first kilometer, enjoy your post run buzz that stays around for most the day in my experience
Yes the buzz definitely lasts all day. Actually that first km seemed slow, I completely miscalculated! Then, of course, I can’t keep it up. But it all worked out ok 😊
I just try and go slowly and gradually increase. It makes the run easier for me. Then I can really speed up at the end. 8.05 is a bit fast for my current fitness level.
We did a garmin plan last year, one run each week was supposed to be 5k negative splits, so…. we started off slower than ever, but however hard we tried there was no way we could speed up, I well remember pumping my arms and making my legs go faster and really working at it and being so disappointed that kilometre was the slowest of the run even though I worked so hard, each time we got needs some work at the end and gave up after a few weeks, probably be able to now. My friend ran alone twice while i was ill and the second run she did 3k and got negative splits, running with her is having huge benefits and I’m getting faster overall but not today
I tell people about c25k all the time. Most recent person was the osteopath last week. I mentioned being frustrated at not being able to run and he said "Ooh so you're a runner then" (I know he runs) and so then I told him how I came to start c25k. I think he was mildly impressed
Nothing better to get your running smooth and easy looking that a good looking roofer 😜. I know the feeling of starting too fast, unless you can pace yourself quickly, you carry it along the rest of the run.
Great run, who cares about negative splits 😁😁 good to see you out there again! Our roofer has started work on our leaky roof too 🎉 love your final gazelle sprint, brilliant! I bet your roofer was impressed 😃
Brilliant gazelle work! You should see my shift in speed when I run past my office on my Mondays off-never know if someone might look out of the window...
A lovely post as usual but I was a bit disappointed .I think your sinning was a bit low key-was hoping for something a bit juicier!
Hi Jools and well done. You don't need a Garmin to record your splits. Just get your friendly roofer to stand at each 1K marker and you'll smash your target!! 🤣
Absolutely adored your closing performance for the roofer. What a star! That so made me smile. A nice return to running, after a (not so long) break. Hardly a sinner!! (an athlete in ‘recovery mode’?!)
Oh, no, J; that’s surely very tough for you all. You must be feeling dreadfully anxious, especially as you can only wait for news. My very best wishes to you through this awful period. I do hope your father is comfortable and overcomes the virus. Look after yourself too.
