A walk followed by a run

Yesterday I moved furniture, I've been wanting to do this for ages, but wasn't quite ready. Change isn't always easy and there's a load of guilt lodged in my heart every time I change something but I can't sit looking at the music studio for the rest of my life. I've removed what I won't use, guitars and drums, (I might keep a drum though)!and rearranged what I use, keyboard, sound system, saxophone and clarinet.Anyway, this is a running forum, so I went for a run this morning.

I really wasn't feeling it but I haven't run since Sunday so thought I'd best go.

No plan involved! That plan thing I joined? Well that fizzled out pretty bloomin quick.

7 degrees so 2 thin tops and long leggings, on the way along the road I decided to walk to the beach and run from there, just under 2 k later I found myself on the wet sand taking photos. Back up onto the path, stop the watch, restart it, set it to 1 min run 1 min walk. Hmm, my legs aren't really cooperating, maybe too long a warm up walk? Maybe the time I spent on a stationary bike at the gym Monday. Ran, passed a group of people, walked, ran again and dodged more people, way too many people enjoying a walk along the seafront this dry day to feel comfortable so crossed at the lights and entered the park. Round the paths, not many people, a few dogs, I'm still not getting very excited about this run and my legs are saying go home. Part way round the lake, past the river bit. Back out to the road, I'm going home.

Geri Halliwell is screeching in my ears about raining men and other things. Not sure why I chose her but haven't listened to that playlist for years.

Up over the railway bridge, stopping here and there to take photos, down the other side, turn into the road that has recently been renewed, run along the smooth tarmac, start wondering if I should book the running track at the leisure centre, I think it's part of my gym membership.

And I'm home 😁 put the kettle on and stretch a bit.

1.92k walk, 3.56 run, still don't feel very excited about it but glad I went, oh and my leggings that were perfect last winter? Loose 🤣🤣🤣 I need to get some more kept having to yank them up. next run very slow steady run and then parkrun Saturday, and now I've moved all the furniture round I've got the urge to decorate 🤣🤣🤣

Run happy VRB's

🍏 Feel for you Sue… that grieving is hard work & catches one unawares. Glad the time is right to do something for you…the changes will never erase the memories of what was… they stay forever represented by the drum! Glad you could get out and run/walk and as ever a fab description and wonderful photos! Hugging you in my heart! Xx

Aww thanks Annie, it's mostly ok, but moving a few of his music things out felt like wiping him out. The memories will last forever though and of course all the music he recorded, he didn't play the drums much, they just looked good, but my sax and clarinet look good too xx

The urge to decorate! 😀. Resist! 😁🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Ha! When Willow died everyone kept offering to help, I said no, I wish I'd said yes to decorating, I painted one kitchen wall and the urge wore off, I thought I'd have more time in retirement with only me to look after 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I used to decorate a lot and did a course to be better at it. Now though I just don’t want to do it at all. My husband has been pinching my kit - rollers and brushes, extension handles etc for painting sheds and such like, and lent my very good pasting table to someone, and I’ve not seen it since. So now I can’t muster any enthusiasm at all. My kitchen is pretty desperate but I think to hell with it and go running instead 😀🏃‍♀️

Go running instead, very good idea, I'm only at the thinking stage, that'll take a while, I lent someone my chainsaw many years ago and when I wanted to use it I couldn't remember who I lent it to so never saw that again 🤣

hm, I've done that with books. I'm happy to lend them to friends but then when I want to read them again I can't remember who I lent them to!

What a tiring day yesterday for and stressful. Feel for u. I’m not so sure on the decorating part, but what about getting the granddaughter to help or have a decorating party, but I must admit that’s not my scene. Are running tracks not supposed to be better on your joints. ? 😊

Nooo, she works full time and I actually love decorating 😁 we are going away in just over a week so it'll probably be after Christmas now 😁 I'm not sure about running tracks and joints, in my early 20's a friend and I ran about a mile, then 7 miles round a running track, then 10 lengths of the pool, shower and run home , we did that 6 nights a week, we must have been so fit 🤣 looking back I can't remember why we didn't go Sundays but we never did

Are you still in touch with this friend and if so, are they still running?

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to JeremiahObadiah

No, she was at university, I was a young mum, we moved and moved in our younger years, that was the longest place we'd lived and were there 3 years, and soon after I met her and another neighbour and we started by walking to the bottom of our road and running one side of a block of houses, even then I was slow, I remember them both running off in front then passing them as they sat on a wall chatting ., the other friend decided it was not for her but we carried on, making the blocks bigger and bigger until we found the running track. 48 years ago now

Impressed by friend and your younger self’s youthful energy and wisdom! I didn’t get going on any fitness until my children were around 10. I’d just felt too knackered and bogged down by motherhood.

We joined a club, we felt very old, most the others were 15 or 16, we were 18 and 20, ran in shorts in summer jeans in winter and plimsoles, it was a great time, I think running was good, something I did just for me out of a life of being a wife and mother

I’m sure it’ll help now that you’ve moved the furniture around, to suit you. I’m impressed that you play so many instruments!

Lovely to read about your run. I’m still at fast walking pace since my back problem about 2 weeks ago.

Fast walking pace is good and I hope you heal soon and can run again. I love the room now, I don't play any of them that well but had piano lessons for years as a child so can read music, I haven't touched the keyboard until recently and am revisiting two handed playing which is slow but fun, I seem to have bought a book of Christmas carols sheet music years ago so that'll be my next project 😁

Some days the run just doesn't come together does it? You've had a very tough year, plus adjusting to retirement, so it's no wonder that some days are 'off' days. Good on you for forcing yourself out into the cold. At least you live in a beautiful place, to see the sea and the other wonderful scenery must make it worth the effort.

Regarding the decorating, I used to love it but recently I just can't seem to get myself started. At the start of this year I wrote a list of all the decorating/projects we need to do around the house. Today we got the first estimate for one of the jobs. You're doing so well!

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to Yesletsgo

Aww ha ha, yes those lists, I made them ready for retirement and ripped them up end of March, but I have other new lists

Yesletsgo profile image

Writing the list means you're halfway to getting the job done ;)

Yes 👍 until you rip it up 😂

I love you r photos Sue and admire the fact that despite your misgivings you got out and had both a walk and a run. You’d have felt rubbish if you’d just stayed at home - and I doubt you’d have done any decorating either! I used to enjoy decorating but these days I have no guilt in getting someone in to do it - there’s far less mess and I don’t have to spend forever getting the paint out of my hair!

SueAppleRun profile image

There is that, about the decorating and yes I'd have been cross with myself if I hadn't got out, I always know when I can't really be bothered because I stop to take lots of photos

Big virtual hug 🫂 for you Sue. You managed to get out which is brilliant. Those doubts that you had about going out well you kicked them into the back of the net! You photos are beautiful and as for the decorating it will still be there when you feel like doing it….. I’m still waiting😳 for my darling hubby to decorate our bathroom ….it’s been about xxxx years since it’s been done and he’s like “I will do it I will”That’s still hasn’t happened. We’ve got the paint etc all new and delicious waiting to perform but the show hasn’t started 😂😂. I’m all for getting some one in to do it. 🤔🤔

You are doing so well Sue and you are so strong . ❤️🥰xx

Ooo that new and delicious paint, I've got some of that too, and some older and part used languishing waiting to jump into action once again. I don't think of myself as strong, I'm just too bloody young to sit and mope for the rest of my life. My mum was 90 and smoked and drank so there's a chance my retirement will be quite long,, but there are those days xx

you got out there and clicked up the KMs even though your heart wasn’t in it - that is good going especially when you have so much else to deal with 👏🤗

There is that, and on reflection, Monday evening stationary bike, not something I'm used to and moving furniture Tuesday, no surprise my legs kept saying, come on woman give us a break and go home. Looking at the photos it was pretty grey out there too, but each day has its own beauty 😊
