Run walk intervals, never again

There's not a lot to say about today, sun shining, mild and the wine has died down, no where to park near the bridge over the river, Willow didn't want to park in town, so we went to the beach, right to the end so he could wander round the fort while I ran, there's a newish walkway across the stones so we went to look at it, it was damp and slippery and too narrow to pass anyone, I could see me hopping on and off the stones and there were a lot of people meandering about, so I decided to run along the road towards home and Willow would potter for half an hour and pick me up at the other end, off I went. I'd set intervals on my watch, 2 minutes run, 1 minute walk.

I set off a bit fast and was soon puffing and then I was worrying and then it was time to walk and then run again, you get the picture,

I slowed down after 15 minutes but tried to keep the rhythm going, 2 minutes felt like forever and then I started to feel miserable, and then Willow passed me slowly in the car and 30 minutes were up!

My watch flashed up fastest kilometre and I swore at it.

I won't bother running there again, it wasn't much fun, but it was a run, I couldn't see the sea, the paths were uneven and I had decided to go without music, maybe that was it.

Back to work tomorrow for a couple of days, then going to drive north and hopefully run and take different photos.

Run happy all

It's worth trying new routes, but sometimes it can be a disappointment. Never mind, you ran - again!

Yes and you are right, I've run from the other direction and it's always been a bit of a slog round there and I don't know why

Oh that sounds like a frustrating run. I can only cope with intervals if I’ve got a guided run commentary telling me when to speed up and when to slow down. I couldn’t be doing with looking at my watch. I can totally understand the urge to swear at it!

Perhaps a small positive-it sounds like you had a good physical workout which means a good reward well and truly earned!

There is that I suppose I just found the whole thing a bit horrible, and of course without music I was listening to music breathing which to be fair didn't sound too bad

Yep. Know that sort of run! Well done for getting it done. I’ve had a fair few the same and I try and console myself that even if my head hated it, it did me some good…and then I plan a reliably nice one for next time!

I'm over moaning about it now 😃 and already given myself the age old talk about if I start nice and slow next time the whole thing will feel much more fun Comparison really is the theif of joy, I see so many running faster than I can comfortably run and get a bit fed up with myself which is silly, I'm the oldest person where I work and the only runner so people look at me and I feel chuffed that I run

we can’t help but do it though…(compare ourselves…)

I have to bite my tongue when people complain about how slow they are…when they’re running at speeds I’ll never match! 😬

So…the only person to compare to is ourselves…and even then then it can be a downer if we’re not living up to our expectations…

So…the main thing is then that it should be fun! Try and forget about comparing ourselves to other runners, stop beating ourselves up when we’re not running PBs…and just enjoy the moment 😊

Even at our snail pace, we’re better off than those who don’t exercise at all…so quite rightly, you should feel chuffed!

🏃🏻‍♀️🐌👏🏼🙌🏼😊

You are so right, the fact that I can run should be enough to make me happy and I know I can run for longer just not when I go off too fast. I've been a bit out of sorts for a couple of days but don't know why, maybe just missing the routine of work

LottieMW profile image
LottieMWAmbassador in reply to SueAppleRun

Well we all have our “off” days…helps us to appreciate the good ones! 😄

I’m sure you’ll soon get back to normal…you can always give yourself a little mental checkup to try and pinpoint what’s causing this, it may just be the heady delights of 5 days off and trying to fit everything thing in…or even just that we all get our “meh” days…

Enjoy your next run 😊🏃🏻‍♀️🐌💕

Well done SueAppleRun for getting out and trying it anyway! At least you’ve established you don’t want to run there again and the sun was shining too 🌞

I'd have been better going west a bit at least then I'd have got a photo of the sea, back in the summer we used to go to the beach, I'd run east and it's a lovely wide pathway, then get to where I finished today and run round the roads, come to think of it I never enjoyed running those roads, if I run out the door and round our local roads I love it so I don't know what the difference is

OMG I hate it when it becomes a hassle just to park the car. Sussex is very nice, but a bit too crowded. This is one thing I don't miss about England.Keep running

A run is a run whatever distance you do. You went out. At least if was sunny when you were out. I was out walking 8 km at 6,30 really misty ,damp and cool. 5 degrees. Mist never lifted till after 11. I hate going without my fone when I’m doing my walks for Spotify so no how you feel. Enjoy what time you have left off work.

Back tomorrow for a couple of days and then off Oop north for the weekend, thanks Doris, you have made me feel better about today's run, although you still walk further and faster than I run 😃

Oh!Sounds like a tough one 🥺

As you say.... Its a run but it's always a shame when you get one you don't enjoy , and we ALL have them ! 😐

I'm sure the next one will make up for it 🙂🤞

I found intervals a saving grace. It’s kept me running and reduced injuries. Mainly reduced my resistance to run. The not intuitive result - both 5 and 10k times are better. That was not my goal, but an ego satisfying bonus. And coming off injury, it really is less daunting.

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to dieOR5k

You are right and I've done them before, my 5 k times for run walk are very similar to run only, I have set it to a minute each in the past and that seemed to work better I'm glad intervals work for you

I started 1 & 1, went to 1.5/1, and settled at 3&2 over this year. I found if I’m having a tough day, I can just flip 3&2 to 2&3. It’s having a flexible strategy that has worked best to manage my expectations of myself.

You were out there, you ran, you found a new run and you’ve ticked it off the list - it’s all good stuff Sola! And you’ve found a run that you won’t bother with again so that’s another thing you don’t have to think about again! Looking forward to seeing the photos of your trip up north - I seem to remember the last lot were rather spectacular!

Thank you and yes, it's beautiful countryside but it might rain in which case we won't be out so much

Well a run is a run I suppose. I've only ever done intervals using one of the NRC guided runs. And to run so close to the sea, but not see it must be frustrating. At least it was sunny. The fog didn't lift here until lunchtime and it's the same again this morning.Have a good time up north. You might be making good use of that hot tub and pool given the weather forecast.

Thank you Diane, yes I'm sure we'll spend most our time indoors

Nobody likes "one of those run"runs but look at it as training for te next run which you will do in a place you know will be wonderful! I'm sure that you are already planning a more scenic route for the next one!
