Can anyone recommend waterproof ish trainers? Is there such a thing even? It’s very wet where I’m running and I’m getting wet feet!

Ask at a specialist sports shop, waterproof running shoes are very expensive

I bought some Salomon Supercross GTX (gortex) in a summer sale. They're keeping my feet dry during rainy runs. I also had a good tip passed on about avoiding cotton socks, as they wick the wet right inside your shoes, so I have just invested in some Hilly merino socks for the winter.

Thank you. I never thought I’d be excited about buying wet weather trainers 😀

Goretex should do the job. Most brands do them but I like Brooks Gtx. It won't stop heavy pouring rain running into your shoes, then it can't get out and if you tread in a big puddle and it splashes over the top it might get in, but good for muddy and wet trails. Have fun!

Thank you. My other trainers are Brooks and I’ve been very happy with them

Another option could be waterproof socks. I haven’t tried them myself but my running friend swears by them. I keep meaning to order some.

I have two pairs of running trainers to allow for more drying time! I don’t mind wet feet while running but hate the feeling of putting soggy trainers on.

Thank you for your suggestions about socks. I’ve got a few ideas to try here.

Hi; I bought waterproof trainers for trail running (in very wet Scotland) shortly after I started and it was rather an expensive mistake. It was horrendously wet on the trails I was going through. After I had run in the lovely Topo waterproof trainers I soon discovered that the water just got trapped inside! I realise now why most trail shoes are actually designed to drain water out not stop water coming in and all my shoes since then have not been waterproof. I wear wool running socks and my feet stay warm enough whilst I'm running and I change soon afterwards into nice dry sockies. The downside is that I have to dry out my shoes which I do with bannana shaped silica gel thingies which are great. I am not a fan of GTX treated shoes in general as my feet get hella sweaty (ick). If you are mainly running in town and the wet is from shallowish puddles or rain then waterproof trainers probably do make sense but out on the trail where water will inevitably come over the top of the shoe quite a lot (even with gaiters) then waterproofing may not be helpful.

Thank you. My running is in the town so hopefully the GTX trainers will be ok

I also have Brooks Ghost GTX. They don’t give like non-waterproof shoes so go up a size. They give my toe nails a real bashing on longer runs as my big toes knock against the hard uppers. Gel toe caps help if you find this happens to you.

Thank you, running is a whole new world!

I have tried the waterproofer sprays with little success the water did not bead off like advertised and just ruined and smudged a perfectly nice pair of trainers they must have been Nike air Vapormax, so if you go this route maybe read some reviews or speak to a shop assistant at a dedicated running shop first. You could always search for a trainer that says it is waterproof, like others have mentioned I have some generic Solomon cross 3 hiking trainers and they look like the type of material that has waterproofing. Like anything nothing is fully waterproof I can imagine the water it going to most likely get in and comes at the cost of ventilation I suppose.

As a cyclist this was a bit of a bane and there are water proof over shoes 👟 not sure if there is anything similar for runners though as the rubber band goes on the sole were the cycle shoe cleat it. Good luck with your search. Personally I am sick of having to use my portable radiator to dry my trainers and the bubble has popped now so an annoying squeak where ever I go. I am not looking at some converse high top waterproof sneakers in cream and I really like the looks of them for cycling at least

Thank you. I hadn’t realised there was a waterproof spray but I definitely won’t go down that route now!

For my money merino socks are the way to go. Your feet get wet but they don't stay cold, the moisture wicks away and warms up (similar to if you wear a wetsuit).

I use Balega Hidden Comfort socks, very comfortable whether the weather is hot or cold and very durable (mine are two years old, run in them regularly but no holes yet). A lot of money for a pair of socks (around £12) but a whole lot less than waterproof trainers. Plus, as a bonus, your feet will be really comfortable and unsweaty on the dry days :)

You haven't seen the price of Injinji toe socks, then. 🤣

Definitely avoid cotton socks if your feet are going to get wet. Synthetic materials are good.
