It’s Halloween, and more importantly, it’s the lull between the storms. We have been battered and flooded with the combination of high spring tides and monsoon like rain on the south coast. Canoe lake park is flooded so you can sit on a park bench and paddle at the same time. Our swans can swim right up to the grass, instead of clambering up to the wide tarmac path.
We woke up to blue skies and knew this was our best opportunity to go for a run along the seafront to the Hayling Island ferry and back. UpTheStanley decided he’d run with me and we both downloaded ’A run with Eluid’ on the NRC app, which we started at the same time and would last an hour. So many people were out enjoying the break in weather, with family and dogs. You could smell the seaweed where it had been washed up so close to the prom. Runners acknowledged each other as we passed, grateful to get out on this mild, sunny morning.
On the way out, we didn’t really notice the 13 mph breeze behind us but when we returned back to the prom it was about 20 mph in our face. Although lighter than it’s going to be, this did take some extra effort.
1 hour done, but I kept going until I got to 8k and UTS , who had peeled off earlier, was waiting at the Southsea Beach Cafe with a nice cappuccino.
Another reward for our efforts was a Halloween badge from Mr Garmin 🎃 who doesn’t like a shiny badge?
For the first time, I don’t think I could recommend this NRC guided run. I found it really difficult to hear what the softly spoken Kenyan was saying, and I also got the impression he didn’t always say what coach Bennett was expecting.

Oh yes, you must form your own opinions on the guided run . I just loved the Runs with Joanie and Lopez so much, so was surprised that this didn’t have the same effect.
I blamed my hearing when I did that run Dexy5; I was disappointed not to be able to pick up everything the great man was saying.
I am glad that you found a route through the chaos; an 8k before the next deluge is a good investment. The weather is pretty cold and miserable up here too, but Molly keeps pushing us out of the door for her cafe walk every day. She is weather proof apparently! Time for my daily stretches now.
Happy Halloween to you Dexy5 and UTS, that was a good run for you today, I was reading on the Net Weather site that Storm Ciaran could have storm force 10 winds along the south coast with yet more heavy rain, not sure about Southsea parkrun this Saturday, anyway I am glad you got that run before the storm comes.The weather where I am in Central Scotland as been nice and sunny both yesterday and today enabling me to go a 7K walk on Monday and a 10 miles run/walk today in the early afternoon as the weather forecast is for rain on Wednesday morning, we have to miss the worst of Storm Ciara with only a fresh east wind but more rain, stay safe, by the way I have ordered my 100 black T Shirt and a 100 black wristband.
So good you both got out, I think tomorrow will be too wet and windy, sit on a bench and paddle, it is so wet, I saw I got that Halloween badge too 😁 stay safe tomorrow

Oh I’m glad it wasn’t just me, about the guided run. You are definitely in the right place at the moment Sandie, it’s not been good over the last week. I keep thinking, how lucky we were with the weather on the Great South Run . Again.
Well done dodging the weather Dexy. Probably wise not to venture out in it over the coming days.
I remember so looking forward to that NRC run as I love Eliud, but you’ve reminded me that I too had the same issue when I ran with it last year. Shame the sound quality was so poor. Most of the NRC runs are superb.
I shall be concentrating on some exercises at home tomorrow cheekychipmunks . Although it’s lovely to see stormy seas, it will be pretty dangerous out there in a named storm. The seafront road has been closed ready for flood water and shingle. We will be checking parkrun course on Friday just in case.
Hi Dexy5, great post and photos, we’ve had our fair share of flooding on Hayling too, especially with the very high tides. Northney and West Lane I think are still tricky in parts. I too managed a beach front jog along sea front. I’ve been trying to find different inland routes not quite as windy, but trouble I’m finding is so many wet and very slippery leaves on pavements!! which nearly ended badly for me! Stay safe out there everyone. 🥰
Oh yes those wet fallen leaves are so slippy ! Not something we suffer from on our parkrun route, but the council have already closed our seafront road, expecting flooding and debris over the next few days.
