Today was a dilemma! It’s been such an hot day and I didn’t think I’d be able to cope with running. So I dithered must of the day about cancelling. But I so enjoy meeting up with everyone. So I decided to go. Katie had already sent a message about the heat and to be sure to bring water - something I don’t usually do on shorter runs. I decided to wear my running vest - I could carry some water, keys and phone. I made sure I was really well hydrated during the day.

Then I had to decide which group to run with. The Jeffing group usually encourages me to work harder for about 4K, but I’ve had an elevated heart rate since Covid and I fancied a shorter, less arduous run in the heat. So I opted to join the Couch to 5K’ers and do a really slow 25 minutes.

Decision made! It was 28 degrees when I met the others. I’ve never run when it’s been that hot! So.. I had my water (and drank it during the run) and off we went, keeping in the shade when we could. I enjoyed it so much! There were just 4 of us tonight, including Katie, and she offers just the right amount of encouragement. I only started to get really warm for the last half kilometre and my heart rate stayed in Zone 3. It was a comfortable run in spite of the heat.

Hot but happy 😊

Zone 3 heartrate is good Jools, mines been stuck in Zone 5, a good relaxed run for you and great to meet up and run with ithers

Thanks, Sue! Mine was in zone 5, too until very recently. Hopefully it’s back to normal now. I’m guessing yours will settle soon.

Hot and sweaty but not actually breathless , ah, its the watch isnt it? But, usually that run would have been zone 3 then a bit of zone 4 near the end. But actually it felt like I should be home with my feet up rather than running

Yes - your watch is telling you porkies there I think . If you were truly in Zone 5, you'd know about it - completely unable to talk, gasping for breath - full-on maximum effort, where you are pushing yourself to your absolute limit cc  Jools2020 .

Assuming a normal 5 zone model, like most Garmin or other watches use, then a relaxed easy run should have you mostly in Zone 2, maybe 3. If your watch is teling you different for what truly feels like a relaxed easy effort, then the either the zones are not set-up properly or the heart-rate isn't being read correctly from the wrist.

Oh course, thank you, it really was hot and was hard work but at no time was i puffed out, I'd run 10k the day before and I couldnt run fast enough to feel puffed out.

Comfortable despite heat - excellent going in 28 degrees! And, again, lovely to run in a group!

I don’t expect to wear it on such a short run, but although I could have managed without any water, it was good to have some! Yes, the vest was a good buy. And now I have it for my longer runs, which I hope to start again soon.

I have a 150ml collapsible flask which fits in my shorts/tights pocket. Perfect for shorter runs if you might need a little bit of hydration

Sounds about the perfect run for those temperatures. It was melting in my pilates class last night even with all the windows open and fans on.Love the photo BTW

That's the great thing about joining a club, it helps to get you out there. It seems you made the right decision, glad you enjoyed it in the end, I can only dream of running in zone 3.Happy running 🙏😁

Add you really working hard when running in Zone 5? See John’s post above about gasping for breath etc. if you feel you’re running steadily it may just be that your maximum heart rate in Garmin isn’t accurate.

It's just one of the problems faced by amputee's, just walking or running takes so much more effort, between 50 and 100% than 2 legged people, also having less body area , our system has to work extra to cool the body down, but as I get fitter it should become easier, so far I've seen improvement in my resting heart rate, it's down from mid 60s to top 50s and I have also much better blood pressure, which had gotten into the high zone, but now only slightly elevated, and that was at the doctor's straight after a run along the canal, I am still carrying too much weight, but that is lowering slowly, just need to lose about another 5kilo's to get to my correct weight range. I know tonight's run will give me a high heart rate, due to the heat and I do not feel 100% , so not too worried about it. Happy running 🙏
