I’m away for a couple of nights and packed my run kit just in case. That proved to be a great decision because I woke up at 7.30am, wide awake and full of beans. That never happens. It must be the sea air! Trainers on and out of the door in less than five minutes. I hardly ever run without eating first but breakfast was booked for 8.30am so needs must. It’s not often you get to run around the grounds of a castle so I’m not missing the chance!
Choosing a base run at what should have been a nice easy pace, I set off across a little bridge across a stream heading for a field where I’d seen bunnies the night before. The watch was pleased with me. I found a lovely little path through the trees and just fell into a comfortable rhythm within a few minutes. The path led over another bridge with some giant rhubarb and a very friendly (and wet!) golden retriever. From there, I turned onto a downhill stretch of road and the watch started grumbling about “too fast” again. This was much nicer than when I began an ascent up a super steep hill and it decided to start complaining that I was “slow”. All my experience on here as both a newbie runner, an ambassador and an admin kicked in and I told it that there was no such thing as “too slow” but it wouldn’t shut up until I got to the top of the hill. It nearly got thrown in a bush! The view from the top was wonderful and the gentle, sloping downhill was a lovely relief. Taking a different path through the fields, I found a large grey heron just sitting in the middle of an empty field. Back to the town and suddenly, all over. 5km done perfectly in time for a cooked breakfast courtesy of the B and B.
A superb start to the day! Maybe these early runs will happen at home too…although I’m not holding my breath!
