This morning I headed out to the seafront as I’m staying with my family for a couple of days. I had an 8km planned as I’m running the 10k part of the Great West Run next week.
The weather was absolutely lovely and I ended up running just over 8km which is the furthest I’ve ever ran. I am pleased to be running next week despite the fact it should’ve been a half marathon. Sometimes it’s best to accept you haven’t quite done enough training and switch race distances - which is what I’ve had to do.
Does anyone have any tips for a first timer at a 10k event? I don’t know what to expect!
I hope everyone has a great weekend with some runs in the sun.

How exciting! Your first event will be really special. Good luck to you! You’ve done exactly the right thing in switching distances. That’s a really brave and sensible decision to make.
My best tip is to watch your pace as you start off. It’s so, so easy to get carried away with the atmosphere and the crowds of other runners and accidentally go off like a rocket. That could lead to not a lot of fun at the end. Best to start steady and let yourself ease into the run so you can finish feeling good. Plan your celebration now!
