Finally, 5 (and a bit) km

I realised this morning how important habit and routine are to running regularly. When I'm at home most days start by being classified as 'run day' or 'not run day' (subject to review lol)

We have no real routine right now. We move, we stop, we stay if we like it, we move if we don't. So when my husband asked me this morning if I fancied a run it almost took me by surprise.

We were moored in a small canal and the other bank had a well maintained towpath. It was around 300m from our mooring to the bridge across the canal and it must have rained in the night as my feet were soaked by the time we reached the towpath. Thank heavens for merino socks, the warmth crept back, a similar feeling to when you jump into cold water in a wetsuit (not the feeling of weeing in a wetsuit as a certain someone suggested).

The path was in good condition and level. I set my NRC distance as 3km, but 1.5 km in decided I wanted to go a bit further. I suggested seeing how we felt at 2 km, we could do 4km if we turned back at that point.

Near 2 km we realised we were nearly at the next lock so we may as well do a recce. Had a look so we could decide how best to pass through it. It was good to catch my breath, so good that we carried on to 2.5km and then turned back towards the boat.

It was a wonderful run. The trees were green, the birds were singing, buttercups and daisies grew in the long grass, swans and ducks with their ducklings swam on the peaceful water. One of those runs where you feel way more energised at the end than at the beginning :)

It seems so long since I ran 5k I'd forgotten how much I enjoy it!

Sounds like a wonderful run. I do like running alongside water. The only issue is that I have to keep stopping to take pictures.

Positives is that it's flat

Flatness is a definite positive! Husband runs a lot faster than me so I leave the picture taking to him 😂
