A cool day for running!

This may be a bit of a ramble, a bit like my running. I set off to see if I could manage 8km, as I work up to 10km again; 3 degrees, gloomy and with a cold north wind so I was really glad to have remembered my gloves.  My average pace was 10:30 per km, which for me is reasonable at the moment so take heart all you runners who think you’re ‘slow’!  But I kept plodding along and 8km duly arrived, conveniently close to home.  No time for changing or a shower as it was RMUW (runners meet up Wednesday) with Dexy5, UpTheStanley, Coddfish and Mr C who had all been running as well. We haven’t had a meet up for a while so it was good to see them all and of course breakfast was yummy! Dexy commented that the 3 of us were signed up to a run at Exbury Gardens later this summer, at which point I finally confessed that I had also signed up for the Great South Run in October, oops! Seemed like a good idea at the time😳..  Photos from this morning were looking across towards Hayling Island in the gloom and a swan on Southsea beach, mulling over whether to go in for a dip! Happy running folks!

A fantastic run from you. You’re really showing that that slow and steady pace gets you where you want to go. I bet that 8km felt sweet when it popped up.

How nice to have a runners’ breakfast. I so which I was closer!

Let’s face it, we’ve all had a “why on earth did that seem like a good idea?” moment with races we’ve entered! Am really excited for you-I’ve heard that the GSR is a lovely atmosphere and I’m absolutely sure you’ll be cheered all the way. Your virtual run buddies will definitely be yelling for you!

It's a cold and miserable day here along the coast too.Great South Run??? How far is it? I fancy that one

In Bath my average pace was 11.11 so you are super speedy, I'll have to train hard to catch you up 😊

It’s 10 miles round the sights of Portsmouth Sola - and pretty flat thank goodness!

Sounds wonderful, if I can get my training on track once retired I might join you, is there a cut off time?

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate10 in reply to SueAppleRun

I can’t find a cut off time on the website SueAppleRun , but I do know that if you don’t reach a certain point by a certain time they will guide you through a short cut to enable you to carry on while they open up the historic dockyard and certain roads. I think you will not qualify for medal and T-shirt if that happens.

But many people walk it in fancy dress so it must be fairly generous and I’m sure that you will have no problem, once you have trained to the distance.

Thanks Dexy5 😊I will definitely see how my training goes, I can run faster than when we first started and know that'll speed up a bit more if I run more regularly, and run I shall, all through summer. I don't think I'm too bothered about a medal but tee shirt would be good

Thanks Al, I think I must be bonkers but I’ve always slightly envied the runners as they set off so this year I thought I may as well join’em!

I found a excellent video of Southsea parkrun, it's parkrun No. 394 and according to the stats was videod on the 20th August 2022 by a man named Martin Chandler who ran it in a time of 19:45, its a YouTube Video with the heading"Ep 26. Southsea Parkrun out and back".

It starts with a warmup run around some of the streets of Portsmouth, a briefing including a tribute to a runner who died recently then the 5K, the video is quickened up a little but otherwise a excellent video of Southsea Parkrun, worth a watch.

I’ve just watched the video Al, he’d run at least one parkrun before he even got to the start line! He started off on the Gosport ferry and rand all through Old Portsmouth before running along the seafront to the start line! I was volunteering on that day - we always have a few marshals on the front at the beginning to shout at the runners to keep left. I was one of them and could just make myself out shouting “your left, left, left, left”!

I watched it a second time, nice tour of Old Portsmouth, I notice that there a lot of war memorials, my father set off from Portsmouth when he took part in the D Day landings on 6th June 1944,I heard you shouting "your left left left left", well done 😀 🏃🏾

I have to confess you could have knocked us all down with a feather at your announcement at breakfast, especially as you were only just joining us for your first ever official race in June. But hey, how many times have you stood on the sidelines cheering people on at the GSR over the last 25 years? I know you can do this , and it’s only twice what you did today! October is ages away so plenty of time to train.

Whoop Whoop whoop.
