Happy New Year run

One of the upsides of having a quiet and sensible New Years Eve at home was to wake up this morning at a sensible time feeling like a human being. Totally unrelated, but the sun was shining so I could enjoy a run! My husband decided he'd come too, so off we went.

Mentally, I was raring to go. The sunshine and a gentle breeze were ideal, and it wasn't quite as muddy as it has been. So why did I find it such hard work? I wasn't running fast but my chest was tight, as if my heartrate was near its maximum. Checked, it was nowhere near there. I slowed down and did some belly breathing and felt better so carried on. Husband got further away from me.

I decided that the difficulties must be down to Toxic 10, and as I continued things did indeed get a little easier.

I tried to think what could possibly be causing me to feel like this. Maybe it was the effort of avoiding the patches of slippery mud. Maybe the soft surface was sapping my energy at every footstep.

I'd had enough sleep, my normal 7-71/2 hours. My body battery was over 70 and said I'd be good for exercise. The only difference was my overnight resting heartrate. It's normally under 60 but last night was over 70.

I didn't drink a lot last night, a couple of glasses of red with a big meal early in the evening, a single can of beer watching the TV and a small glass of prosecco at midnight. My guess is that the alcohol, coupled with snacking all evening, made my heart work harder than normal overnight. I generally stop eating early and only occasionally drink alcohol, and then a lot less (think half a can of lager with a meal). Whilst I'd been sleeping my poor old put-upon heart had been working overtime to help me digest lots of stodge and booze, no wonder it was making its presence felt.

On the upside, I've felt absolutely great all day since then, :)

Happy New Year to all of you, may your best adventures be ahead of you :) :)

I think you've got the nail on the head with overnight HR being high.

I just had 3 nights away and ate and drank far more than usual and I noticed that my overnight HR was between 60 and 63, usually it's around 55 -58. I didn't feel extra tired during the day but they've I didn't do as my running 😄At least you ran and it sounds like a lovely day to start your 2023 running journey.

Happy New Year

This is really interesting to read. I also had a couple of days of an unexpectedly high heartbeat and runs felt like wading through treacle. I’ve not really overindulged but had a few more late nights than usual. I guess everything going on in our lives really does show up on our runs.
