The other day I was congratulating myself that I have been running on and off for almost three years without spraining my ankle.

I should explain that I have sprained my left ankle so many times, from childhood onwards, that nerve tissue has been destroyed, and I can no longer feel it bending until it has gone too far.

This morning I was happily cruising along a route I have run literally hundreds of times, just doing a gentle run to build endurance when I suddenly felt my left ankle twisting painfully. I instantly threw myself to the ground to get the weight off it, landing on the heels of my hands.

I then experienced the kindness of passers by, first of all a cyclist who was heading in the opposite direction and then a lady walking to work. I was more embarrassed than anything, explaining I have a weak ankle and this happens from time to time, and I just needed to wait ten minutes or so and I'd be able to walk on it.

Hobbled the couple of kilometres home and now waiting to see how it goes over the next day or so. It's not swollen so I'm hoping that it's just some internal bruising, no worse than the nice bruises I made on the heels of my hands. 🀞

Ironically, I see my Garmin has responded by increasing my V02 Max score by a point! πŸ˜‚

Oh no! Similarly I’ve sprained my ankle a gazillion times although it seems to hold up ok for the most part, but I feel your pain. Hope everything is ok and how kind of those folk to help. 😊😊😊

Thank you! I'm hoping running and those JD plyometric exercises have strengthened my ankles enough. 🀞

OUCH! I sprained my left ankle on both sides in my C25K graduation run. You have my sympathies.

Thank you! Commiserations on the month you had to spend on the IC. (Which I'm hoping to avoid ... just slight swelling on lateral side now).

I think I felt that just reading it. Look after yourself. Tight ankle boots to help the muscle reset?

Thank you. And, ooh, that's a good idea, I have some breathable hiking boots I can lace tight; thanks again! πŸ‘

Oh that's so accurate! Everything was going so well, and then a moment later it wasn't ... and this little thing that's my ankle πŸ‘Ώ... thanks for the good wishes; I'll be sure to rest up and let nature take its course.

Excellent story! ... well, it was obvs not excellent for you, but very to the point!

Me also too stubborn; I fear my landing face down on the tarmac was very dramatic and alarmed innocent passers by unnecessarily; a very kind American lady walking by wanted to escort me to her nearby flat and call for help. I had a credit card in my pocket (though it's a little distorted from me landing on it), and I should just have asked her to call me a taxi instead of walking home, and then a little later walking to the supermarket to do a planned shop ...

Will I ever learn? I think not, stubborn to the core! πŸ˜‚

Stubborn.. that really is stubborn. I can feel every step of that. Maybe you should have taken a taxi. But that is what we can be like isn't it. It si what makes us the runners we each are and why we enjoy? it so, so much!

Good old Garmin, he likes a shorter run whether intentional or not, heal quickly it sounds painful

Indeed he does! πŸ˜‚Thank you, I hope to be back out there soon, but will let nature run its course. πŸ™

Oh no, just hate it when that happens. Hopefully you will recover soon and re build the strength but know how frustrating it is. Take care!

You may be a little cautious which probably isn't a bad thing! πŸ˜‡

Oh , no! I hope it’s just a minor twist and that you’re feeling OK, FP. πŸ’

Thank you Gail. πŸ™ I'm feeling good, and these things happen, I guess! Hoping to get out there soon, but at my age I'll be cautious (if not wise - little chance of that! 🀣).

It’s just a moment of really bad luck - coupled with the susceptibility you describe. When I fell earlier this year I was actually thinking carefully about my footfall and had just congratulated myself on having successfully avoided a tripping obstacle… so there were some resonances.

I really feel that. I will have to try hard to trust myself, and my feet, next time I feel ready to go out for a run.

Might be too soon right now but: Have you tried ankle-strengthening exercises? Could they be of help (both for the ankles and for the confidence angle)? My physio said the three key ones to maintain for life (I did quite a variety) are ankle inversion, ankle eversion and SL heel raises (all done with control, especially on the β€˜return’). You use one of those bands for the first two.

Thank you Gail. I will look into those with great interest. πŸ™
