Otterly exciting!

No......it's not a misspelled title. Yesterday on my run, a route I've done many times, I was out early. Up at 4.30 and short drive to the sea so running by 5. Going along a dried mud track 2 young otters came out of the verge on my right. They were maybe 10 feet ahead of me but playing together and upwind of me so totally didn't notice me standing rigid. I was mesmerized.... Total disbelief, I hadn't even known we had otters two miles from home. They went into the opposite verge, and disappeared. Obviously I couldn't get the photo in time but I'll never forget the image...especially having seen Springwatch recently and seen the sea otters on Mull. The rest of the run was beautiful, obviously! And I got a bonus photo of a red deer. I haven't stopped telling people about the otters since!!

How wonderful! I would love to see some otters, what a treat 😊. Not surprised you’ve been telling everyone! That is definitely a very special run, and one to remember. The early bird definitely catches the worm, or otter 🦦 .

Gosh that was early. Lovely seeing the otters. You’ll have to go out again same time and see if there they’re again. Maybe they’re early birds as well. A safari run this morning. 😊

That is so nice! What running gives us! So much more than “just” the run! Fab!

Real wild life run. I occassionally see foxes, often see rabbits and frequently nearly trip over squirrels (they seem to like playing on the footpaths arount here!) but an otter is a whole different league - time to replace "Springwatch" with "Runwatch"

It really does give so much. If I hadn't been a lockdown runner I'd never be out so early.

Unexpected wildlife is great! Mostly it's grey squirrels for me and the occasional bunny.

What an amazing encounter. Unforgettable. The things that running brings into our lives! It reminded me of when I crossed paths with a polecat. We’d paused on a very rainy walk under a tree to eat a sandwich. The polecat just trotted along, stopped a few feet away to study us (imagine us frozen still, mouths open, soaked sarnies poised midair).

I can imagine the tableau! Extraordinary encounters stay with us forever because they are so rare.
