Back after calf pain

Experienced calf pain after a 50 minute run 10 days ago. So took an extra day off and did a lot of work with a foam roller and other exercises to ease the stiffness and pain. Then did a short 20 minute run and the right calf (the only one affected) hurt like hell, so I stopped and walked home slowly. Then rested for a week until 8am today. Had a slow 20 min run and it was fine. However, after stretches, warm down, shower etc, calf feels stiff but not too painful.

Will have the weekend off and do another 20 min gentle run on Monday and see how it goes.

A wise decision. You can't be too careful, I injured my calf years ago on a walk and it took months to heal (it was a really bad tear). Make sure you rest it properly, stretch and do calf raises to strengthen it. Hope it gets better soon! 👍

Thank you for your post and good wishes. I hope that my ‘injury’ isn’t as serious as your tear. I had a shin injury a year ago and needed phsio for 3 months before being able to resume running. I think rest and taking it slowly is the best option.

I'm going through the same problem at the moment. Calf went after 3k of an attempted slow run 3 weeks ago. Only just started running again. Found it more comfortable with a light strapping but like yourself I am getting stiffness in the calf the next day. Going to try a faster run today as most of my problems always come when I'm trying to slow down. Good luck.

I’d also increase rest periods rather than trying to ‘run it off’ like I used to when I was 50 years younger🙂

Ignore me Vragtes. I'm an idiot. Just been for my faster run and just after 2k the calf twanged again. I think I've put myself back another couple of weeks. I think rest is probably the only answer

Javo123j-I don’t think you’re an idiot at all; you just want to keep running as did I when I was injured a year ago. That it would take 3 months of physiotherapy and no running before being able to go out again was due to my ignoring the pain, an obvious sign from my 66 year old body telling me that my 66 year old brain may want to run but my joints and muscles are saying “slow it down, hotshot,”. 🤣

Best of luck with your recovery!

I've just taken two weeks off after I experienced slight runners knee problem. Have noticed that first thing when I get out of bed I get a twinge on the back of my knee. Google suggests could be either calf or hamstring. So trying foam rollering. I've bought of the things but never got into it!

I hope the knee problem is nothing serious and the two weeks rest will sort it. Slightly dismissive of rest as a cure before my shin and now calf injuries, I find that it really does work and if properly rested, the problem sorts itself. Good luck!
